Ten 3-year-olds with high hopes and plenty to prove signed up for Northern California’s stop on the road to the Kentucky Derby, Saturday’s $200,000, Grade 3 El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields.

War Story and Mr. Z were among a handful of Southwest Stakes workers Wednesday at Oaklawn. It was sunny and in the 30s, and the track was listed as “fast.” War Story and Mr. Z breezed in the first set, with Lecomte Stakes runner-up War Story going a half-mile in a bullet 47 seconds in his first drill at Oaklawn.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – J S Bach will make his stakes debut Monday in the Grade 3, $300,000 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn following a flashy win at Gulfstream Park. He rolled by 8 1/2 lengths in a maiden special weight at the same 1 1/16-mile distance of the Southwest, and late Wednesday morning, he touched down in Arkansas aboard a flight from Florida.
Lord Nelson, winner of the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes for sprinters on Feb. 1, worked a half-mile in 48 seconds at Santa Anita on Wednesday.
Trained by Bob Baffert for John Fort’s Peachtree Stables, Lord Nelson is being prepared for the $400,000 San Felipe Stakes at 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita on March 7.
“He came out of the race sharp,” Baffert said. “I was happy with the work. He’s right on schedule for the San Felipe.”

ARCADIA, Calif. – On Wednesday morning, Mike Smith was at Santa Anita to work a horse at 6:30, and though he had the rest of the day off on this non-racing day, it was hardly an off day. Smith was headed to the gym for a workout that would crush jockeys half his age.
Texas Red, the winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita last November and a leading contender for the 2015 Triple Crown, was diagnosed with an abscess in his right front foot in the last week and will not train at Santa Anita for the remainder of February, trainer Keith Desormeaux said on Tuesday.
Desormeaux said that Texas Red left Santa Anita on Tuesday morning after training and was sent to a California farm where he will be treated for the abscess while swimming to maintain fitness.
OZONE PARK, N.Y. – While the top three finishers from Saturday’s Grade 3 Withers Stakes could very well run back in next month’s Grade 3, $400,000 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct, that race also looks like the destination for Ocean Knight, undefeated winner of the Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs on Jan. 31.
