Oxley's rebuilt team back in Kentucky Derby with Classic Empire

Barbara D. Livingston
Owner John Oxley will try for his second Kentucky Derby victory with the Mark Casse-trained colt Classic Empire.

John Oxley remembers his father gathering the family around a tiny radio in his hometown of Tulsa, Okla., to listen to Clem McCarthy’s call of the 1946 Kentucky Derby, where Assault launched his successful quest for the Triple Crown.

Eight years later, Oxley was in Louisville as the gray colt Determine won the spring classic. After methodically building a racing stable throughout his adulthood, Oxley won the second Kentucky Derby he ever entered, as the gray colt Monarchos carried his powder-blue and gold silks to victory.

With Albarado injured, Saez will ride J Boys Echo in Kentucky Derby

Barbara D. Livingston
Luis Saez will pick up the mount on J Boys Echo after Robby Albarado was injured last Sunday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Dale Romans didn’t know whether to laugh or cry when his close friend Robby Albarado suffered an injury that would keep the jockey from riding J Boys Echo in the 143rd Kentucky Derby next Saturday.

After the injury, Romans was hounded from all sides as to who would replace Albarado. On Wednesday morning at Churchill Downs, he joked, “I’ve been in touch with [Eddie] Delahoussaye to see if he can get ready in time,” referring to the retired Hall of Fame jockey who won the Derby in 1982 and 1983.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – For what figured to be a relatively quiet and uneventful morning, with nary a single Kentucky Derby workout on the schedule, Wednesday’s Oaks-Derby training session produced more than its share of newsworthy developments.

Girvin wearing Z-bar shoes; final Derby work delayed to Saturday

Keeneland/Coady Photography
Girvin is led by a groom Monday at Keeneland. The Kentucky Derby hopeful has been wearing Z-bar shoes on both front hooves.

So just what is up with Girvin?

For the past week or so, Girvin, the Louisiana Derby winner, has had an unorthodox schedule in preparation for the Kentucky Derby on May 6 at Churchill Downs. Girvin last week was taken from his base at the Churchill Downs Trackside training facility in Louisville to Keeneland in order to train there, the stated reason at the time from trainer Joe Sharp being that the wet weather to hit central Kentucky made training at Keeneland – which also has a synthetic training track – a better option to stay on a regular training schedule.

After five years, Tapit atop Kentucky Derby points list

Barbara D. Livingston
Tapwrit, by Tapit, has earned 54 Kentucky Derby points.

The Kentucky Derby’s points system, which replaced graded stakes earnings as the method for sorting out contenders, completed its fifth year of prep races this spring.

The system’s half-decade in existence has provided an interesting snapshot of which stallions were most proficient in siring the archetypical Derby prospect – precocious colts who run on the dirt, consistently win or place in points races, and peak in the key Derby preps during the spring of their 3-year-old season.

Clocker: Lockdown works for Kentucky Oaks

Barbara D. Livingston
Lockdown (right), with Jo Lawson aboard, works five furlongs with stablemate Elate on Tuesday at Churchill Downs.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Kentucky Oaks-bound Lockdown was the lone Kentucky Oaks or Kentucky Derby worker at Churchill Downs on Tuesday, going five furlongs in 59.59 in company with her Grade 3-placed stablemate Elate after the renovation break. Elate, who was pulled up and vanned off as the even-money favorite in the Grade 1 Ashland in her previous start, was actually the stronger of the Bill Mott-trained duo of 3-year-old fillies at the wire, making up a length on Lockdown, who was under some pressure to finish nearest the rail.

In Derby, Fast and Accurate running to bring sire home

Fast and Accurate wins his graded stakes debut in the Spiral last Saturday.

Kendall Hansen has only one shot to win the Kentucky Derby with a son of his namesake stallion, and there is more on the line with Fast and Accurate’s performance than the Hansen name.

Albarado undergoes surgery for broken leg

Coady Photography
Robby Albarado will now be represented by Ronnie Ebanks.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Veteran jockey Robby Albarado underwent surgery Monday at University of Kentucky Hospital for a compound lower-leg fracture he suffered when thrown from his mount several strides out of the starting gate during the eighth race Sunday at Keeneland.

The setback will sideline Albarado for an undetermined period and will force him to miss his ride on J Boys Echo in the 143rd Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.
