Sonneteer the rare maiden in Kentucky Derby

Barbara D. Livingston
Sonneteer works four furlongs in 47 seconds at Churchill on Monday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – With two defections one week before the Kentucky Derby changing the makeup of the field, Sonneteer will seek to become the first maiden to win the Run for the Roses since Brokers Tip in 1933.

After finishing second in the Rebel Stakes and fourth in the Arkansas Derby, Sonneteer sat 22nd on the Derby points list, behind Lookin At Lee on the bubble of the 20-horse field. Trainer Todd Pletcher declared Malagacy and Battalion Runner out of the race last Saturday, letting Sonneteer and Lookin At Lee into the main body of the field.

Can one-eyed Patch see path to Derby victory?

Barbara D. Livingston
Patch, with exercise rider Isabelle Bourez, didn’t let the loss of one eye stop him from finishing second in the Louisiana Derby.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In the land of the Derby, might the one-eyed horse be king on Saturday?

That is what those associated with Patch are hoping, as Patch, who had his left eye removed before he ever raced, attempts to become the first horse with just one eye to win the Kentucky Derby.

Rebridled Dreams allowed Farrell to spread her wings

Barbara D. Livingston
Farrell could give Rebridled Dreams her third Grade 1 winner if she wins the Kentucky Oaks on Saturday.

A mother’s influence on development in the early months can often go overlooked in the success of a racehorse, but it’s hard to look at the produce record of Rebridled Dreams and not have it in mind.

If Farrell’s Kentucky Oaks bid is successful, she would become the third Grade 1 winner out of the Unbridled’s Song mare, who is the cornerstone of Bob Cummings and Annette Bacola’s Coffee Pot Stable breeding program.

Rough time for Van Berg

LOUISVILLE. Ky. - Hall of Fame trainer Jack Van Berg had hoped for a joyous celebration of the 30-year anniversary of his 1987 Kentucky Derby victory with Alysheba by having a starter in the Derby this year.

Instead, Van Berg is back at Churchill Downs with a heavy heart – and not because none of his 3-year-olds panned out. His oldest son and former longtime assistant, Tim Van Berg, died suddenly April 19 at his California home at age 59.

Pletcher changes up reins, rider on Always Dreaming

Barbara D. Livingston
Nick Bush gallops Always Dreaming for the first time Monday at Churchill.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Always Dreaming, the Florida Derby winner and a leading contender for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, has made life challenging for trainer Todd Pletcher since his arrival at Churchill Downs.

Always Dreaming has been too aggressive in his morning gallops for Pletcher’s liking. On Monday, Pletcher made a change of equipment and a change of rider, with mixed results.

Irap, Nyquist cut from different bolts of cloth

Barbara D. Livingston
Irap worked a mile in 1:44 at Keeneland on Friday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – There are clear differences between Nyquist, who came into his Kentucky Derby win as an unbeaten juvenile champion, and Irap, who won his maiden in the Blue Grass Stakes for the same connections.

“Nyquist is LeBron James, and Irap’s more like Charles Barkley,” trainer Doug O’Neill said. “[Irap is] solid. Even if he’s in the gym every day, he’s always going to be a little bit heavy. He continues to carry a lot of weight, and he’s got tremendous amounts of stamina.”
