Krz Ruckus gets his first stakes victory

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - He was a week late for Mother's Day, but Krz Ruckus did his dam, Krz Ldy, proud here in last Sunday's New Providence.

The 4-year-old Krz Ruckus, owned by Ron Guidolin and partners and trained by Mike DePaulo, is the first foal of Krz Ldy, who won the Glorious Song for the same connections here in 1994.

"Krz Ldy was a pretty good filly, but this one's much better," said DePaulo, while allowing that Krz Ldy's career had been cut short after she had made just two starts at 3 and she well may have had more scope for development.

The Riding Cup, a three-race jockey challenge, began with the fifth race on the program. A jockey earned 1 point for his team by winning a race, 2 points for finishing second, and so on.

Next one's the tie-breaker

Michael J. Marten/Horsephotos
Point Given (2nd from right) wins the 126th Preakness at Pimlico Race Course.

Point Given and Monarchos have established themselves as the best of this year's 3-year-old crop, but the two times they have met, one has fired, while the other has sputtered. So while there will be no Triple Crown winner this year, the $1 million Belmont Stakes on June 9 at Belmont Park still offers a showdown between the Preakness Stakes and Kentucky Derby winners, along with a strong supporting cast.

Unbeaten filly breaks down

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Longshot Dark Ending captured Monday's Grade 1 Selene Stakes at Woodbine as 3-5 favorite Treasureinmyhand broke down.

Treasureinmyhand, previously unbeaten in three starts, went right to the front in the 1 1/16-mile event, but veered out sharply on the first turn and impeded Giving Noreen, Penny Perfect, and Transcendental. She was pulled up by Gary Boulanger, and an examination detected multiple fractures in her right fore. She subsequently was euthanized.

'Dixie Dot' heads cast on Texas's richest day

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Lone Star Million Day, an annual program of seven stakes worth a cumulative $1 million, will be run Monday at Lone Star Park. The card, which draws horses from around the country, is the richest day of racing in Texas.

Dixie Dot Com, based at Lone Star since romping in last month's Grade 3 Texas Mile, is the 118-pound starting highweight for Million Day's featured event, the Grade 3 $300,000 Lone Star Park Handicap.

Chorwon, 8, back for another year

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - It probably won't lead to the Louisville Handicap, the race that made Chorwon locally famous. But simply by returning to action in the ninth-race feature Wednesday, Chorwon will put a smile on the face of his longtime trainer, Hal Wiggins.

Chorwon, an 8-year-old gelding who has won the Louisville three times, is one of eight older horses entered in a $59,800 allowance at a mile on the turf.

"He's probably not going to make his old race, but maybe we'll get it next year," said Wiggins. "I'm going to be optimistic about it."

Windsor Castle back to races

ELMONT, N.Y.- In the wake of Sunday's pick four that paid $126,617 for $1, and with a pick six carryover of $41,332 awaiting bettors at Belmont on Wednesday, it's only natural that racetrackers are thinking big these days.

That goes double for Frank Alexander, who brings Windsor Castle back for his long-awaited 3-year-old debut for Dogwood Stable in the fourth race.

Shoemaker might sort turf milers

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Perhaps the $350,000 Shoemaker Breeders' Cup Mile on Monday will sort out California's confusing group of turf milers.

Through the first 4 1/2 months of the year, no horse has developed into a clear leader on grass, a change from the last two years, when Silic, the 1999 Breeders' Cup Mile winner, dominated the group. As a result, this year's Shoemaker will be an outstanding betting race.

Sky's the limit for pair of 3-year-olds

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Two-thirds of the Triple Crown is finished, but the season is just getting started for lightly-raced 3-year-olds Bayou the Moon and Until Sundown. They race 1 1/8 miles Wednesday in the $75,000 Alydar Stakes at Hollywood Park, with no limit to their potential.
