Tranquility Lake sticks with fillies

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Tranquility Lake on Wednesday was confirmed as a

starter for Saturday's $250,000 Gamely Breeders' Cup Handicap at

Hollywood Park. As a result of Tranquility Lake's presence, the Gamely,

one of the summer's top stakes for fillies and mares on turf, will have

a small field.

Owners Marty and Pam Wygod and trainer Julio Canani considered starting

Tranquility Lake against males in Monday's $350,000 Shoemaker Breeders'

Cup Mile, but have opted for the Gamely, which is run over 1 1/8 miles.

Leg injury sidelines Mr. John

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Mr. John, the last-place finisher in the Preakness Stakes last weekend, has been taken out of training because of a slight ligament injury, trainer Elliott Walden said Wednesday.

"He got hurt in a spot somewhere between the hock and stifle," said Walden. "It's nothing serious, but we're going to go ahead and give him some time off."

Day and 'Rock' looking for a hit

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - As Pat Day nears yet another career milestone, he continues about his business in customary fashion, seemingly oblivious to the enormity of the feat at hand.

Into the Wednesday card at Churchill Downs, Day, 47, was only 14 away from 8,000 wins, something achieved by only two jockeys in North American racing history: Bill Shoemaker, who won 8,833 races, and Laffit Pincay Jr., who passed Shoemaker in December 1999 and since has surpassed 9,000.

Cadman: Top apprentice, with a difference

STICKNEY, Ill. - The Hawthorne jockeys' room is subterranean and feels something like the lounge in a Greyhound bus terminal. The crowded card game in progress Monday morning was entirely in character. Zoe Cadman's oversized fluffy pink bunny slippers, propped up on a table in front of a television, were not.

Gregarious, charming, and refreshingly down to earth, Cadman does not care for cards, but she has made her way in this male-dominated universe since last summer with surprisingly little friction.

Put It Back wins again, bound for Riva Ridge

ELMONT, N.Y. - Put It Back won his fourth consecutive race on Wednesday, earning a spot in the $150,000 Riva Ridge Stakes on June 9, with a 5 1/4-length victory in a money allowance race at Belmont Park.

Windsor Castle, making his first start since winning the Remsen last November, finished second, 4 3/4 lengths ahead of Cowdin Stakes winner Fistfite. Charlie's Card was last in the four-horse field. Multiple Choice scratched.

Mr Ross sticks to gallops

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Mr Ross, who could start as second choice in the wagering behind Dixie Dot Com in the $300,000 Lone Star Park Handicap on Monday, is training for the race "Monarchos-style," said trainer Donnie Von Hemel.

Mr Ross will not have a major workout leading into Lone Star Park Handicap, the main event on a seven-stakes card.

"We're going with the Monarchos method," said Von Hemel, referring to the lighter training regimen used to prepare Monarchos for his victory in the Kentucky Derby.

Greny tough to beat

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Greny, who is two-for-two since returning from a year layoff, heads a field of six fillies and mares in the $32,000 allowance feature at six furlongs at Bay Meadows Friday night.

Route is okay for Affair

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Moonlight Affair and Mysteryachievement, the first two finishers in the April 22 Lady Angela Stakes, will compete in different allowance races on Friday at Woodbine.

Moonlight Affair won the Lady Angela, a seven-furlong dash for Ontario-sired 3-year-old fillies, after mounting a four-wide rally from seventh over a track which favored outside closers. It was just her second start of the year and her first stakes triumph.

Retired Habit, as always, ready to fire

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Medium in size, above average in ability, Retired Habit probably will not win a Grade 1 anytime soon. But when he enters the starting gate for the seventh-race feature on Friday at Hollywood Park, bettors need not worry whether he will fire.

"He tries every time; he's just got heart," trainer Richard Matlow said. "He's training good, and he likes this track."

Abel to carry on Castellano winning tradition

MIAMI - Throughout the 2000 campaign at Calder, Abel Castellano rode in the shadow of his older brother Javier, who won his second straight Tropical-at-Calder title. This year it will be Abel's turn to keep the Castellano name atop the local jockey standings.

Javier Castellano moved his tack during the winter to New York, where he continues to ride with considerable success. Abel left this area for Kentucky last fall and was the top apprentice and sixth leading rider overall at Churchill Downs when he suddenly decided to return to Miami for the summer.
