Mott posts rare win at Woodbine

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Red Sea and Del Mar Show won the two divisions of Saturday's Grade 3 Connaught Cup Stakes, a pair of 1 1/16-mile turf races contested over yielding ground at Woodbine.

Red Sea ($7.10) tracked a moderate pace set by Academic and Medievil Hero in the first division, which was worth $165,150. Red Sea was stuck in traffic throughout the first half of the stretch run, but jockey Emile Ramsammy found room inside the eighth pole and got him home on top by a half-length over River Boat.

Roger Attfield trains Red Sea, who covered the distance in 1:47.49.

Come September posts $39 upset

STICKNEY, Ill. - Come September won the $57,550 Regal Rumor Stakes at Hawthorne. Come September ($39.80), ridden to victory by Alfredo Juarez Jr., stalked the early pace set by Capitol View and outgamed her in the stretch to score by three-quarters of a length. The late-running Faccia Bella closed to be third.

Trained by Joe McKellar, who hadn't won a race at this meet, and owned by her breeders, Larry Gillen and L.J. Gaudreau, Come September ran six furlongs on a sloppy track in 1:12.01.

Silver Bandana, Platinum Tiara run one-two for Waunsch

MIAMI - Platinum Tiara received all the attention coming into Saturday's $150,000 Calder Breeders' Cup Handicap, but trainer Joe Waunsch warned everybody not to forget his other horse in the race, the older and more experienced Silver Bandana. Waunsch proved prophetic when Silver Bandana upset her more publicized stablemate, rallying to a one-length victory under a rail-skimming ride by Rene Douglas.

Speedsters must avoid duel

MIAMI, Fla. - Something must give when speedsters Forty One Carats and Hal's Hope square off against six others in Monday's $75,000 Memorial Day Handicap going 1 1/16 miles at Calder.

The last time Forty One Carats ran at Calder he set a six-furlong track record while winning the Smile Sprint Handicap in October. He comes off three straight sprint races since returning from a winter freshening and has always shown keen early speed in routes.

'Irish' and 'Dancer' top feature

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Irish Pleasure and Kat Dancer look like the ones to beat in a $50,000 optional race Sunday at Hastings Park. The 6 1/2-furlong race drew a field of eight lightly raced 3-year-olds, and other than Kat Dancer, each is looking for his second career win.

Fancy As won't see prime foe

CALGARY, Alberta - Fancy As will continue his march toward the $100,000 Alberta Derby in Sunday's one-mile Hoofprint on My Heart, which drew a field of six 3-year-old colts and geldings.

The final stakes prep for the June 16 Derby, Sunday's race lost a bit of its luster when Manitoba-based Corporate Shuffle, the champion juvenile in that province last year and the only horse to have defeated Fancy As, failed to ship in for the $30,000 handicap.

Turf or dirt is Jaipur's puzzle

ELMONT, N.Y. - Trainer Richard Schosberg was practicing his rain dance Friday morning.

Schosberg plans to bring Affirmed Success back from a six-month layoff in Sunday's Grade 3, $100,000 Jaipur Handicap at Belmont Park, but would prefer not to do it over a soft turf course. With all the rain that hit the area this week - and there is more in the forecast over the weekend - there is a possibility the seven-furlong race could be moved to the main track.
