'Sandy' ships in; dangerous in Moseley

EAST BOSTON, Mass. - As is the case in the Massachusetts Handicap, out-of-town horses appear to hold an upper hand in the $150,000 James B. Moseley Breeders' Cup Handicap, the supporting feature on Saturday's 14-race card.

The six-furlong Moseley, the 11th race on the card, drew a field of eight. The 118-pound topweight and probable favorite is Say Florida Sandy, a three-time winner this year who enters the Moseley off a troubled second to Peeping Tom in the Grade 1 Carter Handicap at Aqueduct. Say Florida Sandy will be ridden by Joe Bravo.

Clement a double threat in Sheepshead Bay

ELMONT, N.Y. - Trainer Christophe Clement says he would hate to have to choose between Aiglonne and Playact, a pair of 4-year-old fillies the French-born trainer sends out in Saturday's Grade 2 $150,000 Sheepshead Bay Handicap at Belmont Park.

"I don't think there's that much difference between the two," Clement said.

Handicappers won't have to fret over which Clement-trained filly is better, as, because of common ownership, Aiglonne and Playact will be coupled in the wagering and loom a short-price in the 1 3/8-mile turf race.

Prather nearly ready to ride

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Apprentice rider Kris Prather, who led the nation in victories for much of this year before injuring her knees, is nearing a return to action at Churchill Downs.

Prather, 22, exercised six horses at Churchill on Wednesday morning. "I'm not even sore," she said Thursday after working two more. "Realistically, I'm hoping to starting riding races again in about a week."

Ouzts reaches 4,000 win tally

Jockey Perry Ouzts became the 39th rider to reach the 4,000-win plateau when he guided Lil Pike to victory in Thursday's eighth race at River Downs. In typical Ouzts fashion, Lil Pike was sent to the lead at the start and never looked back in the 4 1/2-furlong claiming event.

Simulcast dispute at Suffolk

A bill that would legalize account wagering and expand simulcasting in Massachusetts has pitted Suffolk Downs against its own horsemen.

The bill, which was introduced Wednesday to a joint committee of the Massachusetts legislature, would award the bulk of revenue from simulcasting to purses. Suffolk officials said they would fight the bill in its current form because of the provision, which would cost the track $4 million a year.

Dr Greenfield has right stuff

Dr Greenfield is the wild card among the nine horses targeting the 133rd Belmont Stakes on June 9. Is he the next Go and Go or My Memoirs, European invaders who finished first and second in the race?

Or is he the next Arinthod or South Salem, European invaders who finished up the track?

Given the horse's record and that of his connections, it would appear that Dr Greenfield is not a horse to be readily dismissed.

Purses redistributed for West clenbuterol positives from 1998

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - The purses of five races run in California in 1998 involving horses that tested positive for clenbuterol were redistributed earlier this week after the owners exhausted or withdrew their court appeals.

All five of the horses involved in the purse redistributions were trained by Ted West. In 1999, West was fined $12,000 and served a 90-day suspension for having eight horses test positive for clenbuterol.

Orseno rethinks sending Perfect Sting with males

ELMONT, N.Y. - Trainer Joe Orseno said that for him to run defending female turf champion Perfect Sting against the boys in next Saturday's Grade 1 Manhattan Handicap, circumstances would have to be ideal.

The recent spate of wet weather in New York the last few weeks have provided less-than-ideal conditions under which to train horses, and that's why Orseno is now leaning toward running Perfect Sting in the Just a Game Breeders' Cup Handicap, also on the Belmont Stakes undercard.

Winds of Love must show he can go long

MIAMI - Only one of the 11 3-year-olds entered in Saturday's $60,000 Simply Majestic Stakes has advanced beyond a preliminary allowance victory, but someone in the lineup is guaranteed to become a stakes winner. The Calder feature has an evenly matched field to go 1 1/16 miles on the turf in a race that offers $20,000 in bonus purse money for Florida breds.

Where's Taylor? Back on bit at Hawthorne

STICKNEY, Ill. - Where's Taylor struggled through this winter, but the year still is young and he will renew his campaign Saturday at Hawthorne, where he faces nine rivals in the $50,000-added Sun Beau Stakes.

The Sun Beau will be run at 1 1/16 miles on the Hawthorne turf course, duplicating the circumstances under which Where's Taylor scored his first graded stakes win - long overdue - in the Grade 3 Robert F. Carey Memorial last fall.
