'Rose' fits route best

VANCOUVER, B.C. - Catahoula Rose looks like a standout in an unrestricted allowance race for 3-year-old fillies at Hastings Park on Sunday. The 1 1/16-mile race drew seven 3-year-old fillies, but only Catahoula Rose has gone farther than 6 1/2 furlongs.

Catahoula Rose's best races have come at 1 1/16 miles. She came within a half-length of winning the Fantasy Stakes last September and then shipped to Turf Paradise, where she finished third in three straight stakes, including the $75,000 Arizona Oaks, also at 1 1/16 miles.

Sprint boils down to two

CALGARY, Alberta - Viva Ruckus and Grovenor figure to battle to the wire in Sunday's $15,100 seventh race for fillies and mares.

The six-furlong sprint drew six entrants sporting claiming prices of $20,000 but shapes up as a two-horse race.

Viva Ruckus finished three-quarters of a length in front of Grovenor last time out in open company to grab place money behind Old Victory.

The two mares were entered in the May 21 sprint after their race failed to fill and both gave good accounts against their male foes.

Feverish looks like a million

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Even a victory in Sunday's Grade 1, $250,000 Milady Breeders' Cup Handicap at Hollywood Park will leave Feverish a few thousand dollars short of the $1 million mark in earnings.

But the seven-figure earnings mark is not as important to trainer Dan Hendricks and owners Marty and Pam Wygod as the distinction that Feverish would gain for winning a Grade 1.

"I've done the math," trainer Dan Hendricks said. "If she wins this, she's worth a million."

Nassau to Heliotrope yet again?

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Heliotrope, last year's champion turf female, will try to win the $196,175 Nassau Stakes for the second straight year Sunday at Woodbine.

The 1 1/16-mile turf race drew a diverse field of eight fillies and mares, including American invaders Zeiting and Great Fever.

After missing most of 1999 with an injury, Heliotrope had a remarkable 2000 campaign. She won four of nine starts, including the Grade 3 Nassau by a nose after running fourth in the allowance prep for the race.

Orseno, Thunder Blitz have that winning look

ELMONT, N.Y. - Trainer Joe Orseno is starting to get that look again. It's the look of a man who is bringing a howitzer to a knife fight. It's the look he displayed in the days leading up to the 2000 Preakness when Red Bullet upset Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus.
