Three Glitter Men a star in making

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Trainer Bret Calhoun, whose Cowboy Dan at 2 came within a neck of upsetting eventual Horse of the Year Favorite Trick in the 1997 WHAS-TV Stakes, appears to have another talented 2-year-old in Three Glitter Men.

Three Glitter Men will make his career debut Thursday night in the fifth race at Lone Star Park, one of three five-furlong trial races for the colts and geldings division of the $150,000-estimated Texas Thoroughbred Association Sales Futurity. The finale is set for June 30.

Smoke Glacken getting winners

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Smoke Glacken was a champion on the track, and a champion to Monmouth fans. They watched him win his maiden, win the Tyro Stakes, and the Grade 2 Sapling here as a 2-year-old, and break the track record in the Grade 3 Jersey Shore Breeders' Cup Sprint as a 3-year-old.

Now, Smoke Glacken, the 1997 Eclipse Award-winning sprinter, is showing signs of becoming a champion sire.

Smoke Glacken's first crop is at the races, and three of his 54 foals have won. Most of the foals have not reached the races yet.

It's Win City for Tiller - and on to the Plate

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Bob Tiller felt vindicated last Saturday after his charge Win City won his third consecutive stakes in the Plate Trial, the definitive prep for the Queen's Plate.

Tiller said he took some flack for running Win City in the nine-furlong Trial, since it was the gelding's fourth start in two months. It leaves him with a three-week gap until the June 24 Plate, a $1 million race for Canadian-bred 3-year-olds.

C D Cool just catches Little Lolitta

CALGARY, Alberta - Jockeys Ron Blinston and Stephan Heiler had plenty of time to reflect on what might have been while awaiting the result of the photo following last Saturday's Lilac Handicap.

Blinston made a good decision aboard Little Lolitta by taking back off the rapid fractions of 22 and 46 seconds set by the favored Brighton Belle.

When Brighton Belle stopped midway down the backstretch, Blinston found himself alone in front and turned for home with a clear advantage.

A P Valentine tunes up in 59.35

ELMONT N.Y. - Trainer Nick Zito believes his home-track advantage will be the key to his bid to win Saturday's 133rd running of the Belmont Stakes.

Tuesday morning Zito's A P Valentine strengthened that opinion with a quick, yet easy five-furlong workout on Belmont Park's main track.

A P Valentine, coming off a second-place finish in the Preakness Stakes, took to the track at approximately 7:00 a.m. under exercise rider Jamie Sanders and rattled off fractions of :23.58, and :35.28 on his way to a five-furlong clocking in :59.35 breezing.

Key factors give edge to Elaborate

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - A surplus in class and a lack of current form distinguishes Wednesday's $75,000 Ack Ack Stakes at Hollywood Park, where graded stakes winners Early Pioneer and Big Ten return from extended layoffs against razor-sharp Elaborate.

Beyond inactivity, Hollywood Gold Cup winner Early Pioneer and Californian winner Big Ten are further compromised by distance. At 7 1/2 furlongs, the one-turn Ack Ack falls somewhere between a sprint and a route, and favors Elaborate, a top-class sprinter who embodies every quality his rivals lack, not the least of which is recency.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Fogerty will put his unbeaten record on the line Wednesday at Woodbine in the $107,200 Bold Ruckus Stakes, a six-furlong turf dash for Ontario-sired 3-year-olds.

He opened up a two-length lead in the stretch after putting away several early challengers, and got home on top by 3 1/2 lengths in a quick time of 57.20 seconds.

Baffert: Captain Steve 'not there' yet

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Captain Steve and his main challenger in the upcoming Stephen Foster Handicap, Unshaded, both went through serious drills Monday over a sloppy track at Churchill Downs.

With trainer Bob Baffert watching, Captain Steve breezed seven furlongs in 1:25.60 under Sal Gonzalez Jr. Baffert is still concerned that Captain Steve, winner of the March 24 Dubai World Cup in his previous start, has yet to return to 100 percent form following the arduous overseas journey.
