Flame Thrower career threatened by leg fracture

ELMONT, N.Y. - Flame Thrower, who finished a gutty second in Saturday's Riva Ridge Stakes, was scheduled for surgery Monday night in Southern California to repair a lateral condylar fracture of the left front cannon bone.

Owner Gary Garber said he would wait until the surgery was performed before making a decision on Flame Thrower's future, but was pessimistic the colt would race again.

"We won't know until we do the surgery, but if he's not going to be as good as he was, he'll be a stud horse," Garber said.

Pals Broome and Hills in feature showdown

OCEANPORT, N.J. - The two leading trainers at Monmouth Park, Eddie Broome and Tim Hills, saddle horses in Wednesday's feature, a $37,000 allowance sprint for fillies and mares.

Hills sends Always on the Go, who makes her second start of the season and will be ridden by Eibar Coa. Broome saddles Lucky Baroness, a 4-year-old filly who raced well but didn't win this spring at Hialeah.

Gold Nugget set to defend Dallas Turf Cup

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Gold Nugget will be reunited with Bobby Walker Jr. for the Dallas Turf Cup at Lone Star Park on Saturday, a race the pair won in a 16-1 upset last year when they defeated a tough field of shippers. Kerrygold heads the group of out-of-state horses probable for this year's running of the 1 1/8-mile handicap, which has been boosted in value from $250,000 to $300,000.

Woodbine: Quiet Resolve gets up

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Quiet Resolve, Canada's reigning Horse of the Year, wore down a stubborn Kimberlite Pipe in late stretch to capture the Grade 2, $341,400 King Edward Breeders' Cup Handicap at Woodbine.

Kimberlite Pipe, the 1999 Louisiana Derby winner, set slow splits of 24.43 and 47.82 seconds over firm ground in the 1 1/8-mile test. Quiet Resolve stalked the pace under Todd Kabel, who moved him off the rail heading into the turn.

Bay Meadows: Sir Alfred wins at 11-1

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Sir Alfred, an 11-1 shot, won the $100,000, Grade 3 Ascot Handicap at Bay Meadows in a race that was overshadowed by a spill on the final turn.

Jockeys Frank Alvarado and Dennis Carr both were thrown to the turf and were taken to Chope Hospital for X-rays. Dr. David Seftel, track physician, said both riders were experiencing pain in the hip and tailbone area but were alert and talking.

Rampaging Alf goes on rampage in Longden

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - On paper it looked like there would be a furious battle for the front end between Lord Nelson, King Jeremy, and Rampaging Alf in the John Longden 6000 Sunday at Hastings Park. However, when they sprung the gate Rampaging Alf looked like he was given a head start as he quickly opened up on the rest of the field and then cruised to a 5 1/2-length victory over the late-running Ball and Chain.

Like mother, like daughter?

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Dance Smartly was the last filly to capture the Queen's Plate, with that 1991 victory coming three weeks after her score in the Canadian Oaks.

Dancethruthedawn, a daughter of Dance Smartly, will be looking to duplicate that feat for owner-breeder Sam-Son Farm when she comes back on just two weeks' rest in the $1 million Queen's Plate here June 24. She also will be attempting to follow in the footsteps of her full brother Scatter the Gold, who won last year's Plate. The victory was the first of Scatter the Gold's career.

Stevens looks for weekend return

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Jockey Gary Stevens on Monday was diagnosed with a sprained right knee after an incident in the post parade of Sunday's eighth race at Hollywood Park.

The minor injury, which occurred a day after he won the $1 million Belmont Stakes aboard Point Given, will keep Stevens away until the weekend. As a result, he said he will not ride at Royal Ascot in England next week.

Stakes stacked early in meet

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A front-loaded stakes schedule for the fall meet at Keeneland Race Course was announced Monday, with most of the major events scheduled for opening weekend because of the three-week time frame leading into the Oct. 27 Breeders' Cup championships at Belmont Park.

Keeneland officials said earlier this spring that they intended to revise the stakes schedule to accommodate horsemen who wished to prep their horses for the Breeders' Cup. Accordingly, six graded stakes will be run on the opening weekend of the meet, Oct. 5-7.
