Sprint specialist Max's Pal gets a tune-up

OCEANPORT, N.J. - At six furlongs, Max's Pal is tough to beat. And with the way Max's Pal worked out last Saturday, it seems like the 4-year-old colt is primed for a huge effort in this Saturday's $75,000 six-furlong Longfellow Stakes at Monmouth Park.

Max's Pal, trained by Ben Perkins Jr., worked out for the first time since his runaway victory in the $150,000 James B. Moseley Breeders' Cup on June 2 at Suffolk Downs. Max's Pal, a son of Marquetry, worked four furlongs in 47.80 seconds on a fast track. The bullet workout was tied for the fastest of the morning.

Red Bullet, Macho Uno arrive on scene

ELMONT, N.Y. - Saturday was a bittersweet day for trainer Joe Orseno.

Champion Perfect Sting got on a van bound for owner Frank Stronach's farm in Ocala, Fla. to recuperate from a tendon injury she suffered in the Manhattan Handicap on Belmont Stakes Day.

On a happier note, Orseno watched last year's 2-year-old champion Macho Uno and last year's Preakness winner Red Bullet unload from the same van that ferried Perfect Sting to Adena Springs South.
