Bailey rides off with Jockey Championship

Lone Star Park
Jerry Bailey holds up his championship tropy after winning the NTRA All-Star Jockey Championship on Friday night.

GRAND PRAIRIE, Tex. - Dallas native Jerry Bailey captured his first title in the NTRA All-Star Jockey Championship on Friday night when Pesky Rascal, his final mount of the series, rallied to finish second, allowing the three current Hall of Fame members in the contest to sweep the top three placings.

Bailey and three others among the 12 competing jockeys had a chance to win going into the final leg of the four-race series. But when Bodacious Bubba, a 24-1 shot, captured the last race under Jorge Chavez, Bailey inherited the victory by virtue of total points.

There's no pace in this race

Benoit & Associates
Happyanunoit wins her 2001 debut in last month's Gamely.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Subtract $50,000 from the purse and remove all pace, and the 2001 version of the Grade 1 Beverly Hills Handicap on Sunday at Hollywood Park is nearly identical to last year, when Happyanunoit romped and Astra finished off the board.

Allowance is Swaps prep for 'Crafty'

Desormeaux's trip home only a visit

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Kent Desormeaux returns from Japan on Sunday to ride four horses at Hollywood Park, including Astra in the $200,000 Beverly Hills Handicap.

But his presence in his homebase of Southern California does not mean he is finished with Japan - this week or in the long term.

Desormeaux is scheduled to arrive at Los Angeles International Airport at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. On Sunday evening, he is returning to Japan to ride a major stakes there on Tuesday.

Lake: Positive won't hurt business

ELMONT, N.Y. - Scott Lake, the leading trainer in the country in wins, does not believe a recent clenbuterol positive on one of his horses will affect his business.

"If it was some class 1 drug or something, yeah, it's going to hurt you," Lake said Friday morning at Belmont Park where he has 17 horses stabled. "It's something you're allowed to use in training. This horse just carried it in his system a little longer."

Shopping for Love logical pick

ELMONT, N.Y. - Shopping for Love goes from live longshot to logical favorite when she drops back in with New York-breds in Sunday's $75,000 Mount Vernon Handicap at Belmont Park.

Two weeks ago, on Belmont Stakes Day, Shopping for Love battled stubbornly in the Grade 3 Just a Game Breeders' Cup Handicap, only to lose by a neck to License Fee. It was the third time in five races against open stakes company that Shopping for Love finished second.

Superfly may take a shot

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Next Saturday's 1 1/16-mile Burnaby Stakes at Hastings Park is shaping up as an excellent race.

Last year's 2-year-old champ, Diglett, is proven at the distance and will likely be a solid favorite. His trainer, Gary Demorest, reports that all systems are go for Diglett. After watching Fancy As win the Alberta Derby on an ugly racetrack at Stampede Park, Demorest was glad that he kept Diglett safely tucked away in his barn.
