Long-awaited win within reach for Howard

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Neil Howard has come close, but has never managed to grab the brass ring here at Woodbine.

On Saturday, Howard attempts to win his first race here when Good Game goes in the Grade 3 Dance Smartly, a 1 1/8-mile turf race for fillies and mares that offers a purse of $171,300.

The Kentucky-based Howard had six starters here during the 1990's, with a third-place finish by Parade Ground in the 1998 Canadian International his most profitable result.

Lumpkins moves tack to Mountaineer

PLEASANTON, Calif. - Jason Lumpkins, who arrived in northern California a little more than a year ago and gave perennial jockey champion Russell Baze one of his sternest tests at the recent Bay Meadows meeting, will leave the area July 23 and will probably miss the summer-fall Bay Meadows meet.

"I'm going back to West Virginia," Lumpkins said. "I have some loose ends to tie up there, and I will probably ride at Mountaineer Park the rest of the year."

Lumpkins does plan to return, but said he could be gone for up to six months.

To the top, nice and slow

Benoit & Associates
Gourmet Girl, with Gary Stevens up and Pico Perdomo at her side, after her victory in the Vanity Handicap.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - The sight of Pico Perdomo with his arm draped across the shoulders of Larry King as if they were best pals from way back should not have been alarming. But it was.

Then again, strange forces seem to intersect at the races. This was Hollywood Park last Saturday afternoon, and the Vanity Handicap had just been run. So it probably made perfect sense that the most recognizable name in the world of the celebrity gabfest would share the post-race interview stand alongside the most famous trainer in the history of Uruguay.

Pick your poison: Mott or Clement?

Trainers Christophe Clement and Bill Mott again find themselves in a familiar position Thursday at Belmont Park: rivals in a turf race.

Clement and Mott have combined to win 18 races at the meet - 13 on the grass - and each sends out a runner in the $48,000 feature for 4-year-olds and older horses. The third-level allowance, which drew seven horses plus four main-track-only entries, will be run at 1 1/16 miles over the Widener turf course.

Mcdab a new horse since surgery

After a pair of poor performances in his first two starts in this country, Mcdab has turned in two excellent efforts this summer at Hollywood Park. A speed horse who is better on turf than dirt, Mcdab led from start to finish in a first-level allowance race on May 12, then just failed to last when second in a second-level allowance race on June 7.
