Takarian wins American for 2nd time

ALTOONA, Iowa - Bonapaw, favored at 2-5, controlled the pace of the six-furlong Iowa Sprint Handicap and drew off to score by 4 1/4 lengths over Sand Ridge Wednesday at Prairie Meadows.

Bonapaw, who carried highweight of 119 pounds, including jockey Gerard Melancon, spotted his five rivals from four to six pounds in the $150,000 Sprint Handicap, but it wasn't nearly enough to make a difference. Melancon kept Bonapaw, a 5-year-old gelded son of Sabona, in hand while maintaining a slim lead down the backstretch before the pair went clear approaching the turn.

High-percentage Adamo on the rise

FORT ERIE, Ontario - After 10 years of training, Tony Adamo had his greatest day in racing Sunday, saddling two winners for Peter Siegel of Huntington, N.Y., including Tsakpina in the Center Stage Anne Stakes.

"I had won two races in one day before," said Adamo, a 30-year-old native of Kenmore, N.Y., "but Tsakpina was my first stakes winner. Everyone I knew was there - my mom and dad, my friends from Buffalo, and my owner [Peter Siegel] had flown in. He lives 20 minutes from Belmont Park and has horses there."

'Wanda' fit for Dance Smartly repeat

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - If you believe in deja vu, then Except for Wanda has to be your horse for Saturday's Dance Smartly at Woodbine.

A 6-year-old mare owned by George Richter and trained by Bruce Smither, Except for Wanda was a nose winner at 21-1 in last year's running of the Dance Smartly, fending off favored Only to You in a stirring finish.

When the two compete again here in Saturday's edition of the Grade 3 turf race for fillies and mares, Except for Wanda again figures to go off at double-digit odds with Only to You likely to reign as the public choice.

Touch Tone trying one turn too far?

ALTOONA, Iowa - The promising but lightly raced Touch Tone will attempt to carry his speed around two turns for the first time in the 1 1/16-mile, $250,000 Iowa Derby, part of a strong 10-race program Friday night at Prairie Meadows. The card also includes the $125,000 Iowa Distaff.

'Old Sun' exits key turf race

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Stakes-placed Lucky Old Sun should be strongly backed in Friday's Woodbine headliner, a first-level allowance in which eight 3-year-olds will line up at a mile on the grass.

Lucky Old Sun seemed to possess lots of potential when he captured his debut in a 6 1/2-furlong maiden special weight dash on the turf last July 29. He was bet down to 1-2 in the allowance prep for the Summer Stakes a month later, but couldn't collar front-running Speed Gun and had to settle for second.

Vera Ice Lady goes again on the turf

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Following a last-place finish on dirt in May, Vera Icy Lady was pointed to an allowance race on turf on June 8 at Hollywood Park for a change of pace.

When she won the sprint in an upset, trainer Marty Jones realized that the 5-year-old Vera Icy Lady had found a new career.

On Friday, Vera Icy Lady returns in a turf sprint over 5 1/2 furlongs where she will be shorter than the 9-1 she was in June. Although she faces a competitive field of fillies and mares in an allowance race/optional claimer, her recent win makes her one to follow.
