Heat is on Dream Supreme

MIAMI - Dream Supreme, whose bid for leadership in the filly and mare sprint division was sidetracked by a loss to Dat You Miz Blue in the Vagrancy Handicap, will attempt to bounce back Saturday against eight rivals in the $400,000 Princess Rooney Handicap. The Grade 3 Princess Rooney is the highlight of the second annual Summit of Speed, an all-sprint program at Calder that includes five stakes with combined purses of more than $1 million.

Donk has confidence in Sharp Performance

ELMONT, N.Y. - Trainer Dave Donk was so impressed with Sharp Performance's effort in his last race, a victory in a first-level allowance on Belmont Stakes Day, he's taking a shot with his lightly raced colt, placing him among stakes winners in Sunday's $150,000 Lexington, a Grade 3, at Belmont Park.

Sharp Performance stormed home a two-length winner in that June 9 allowance, and ran the

1 1/4 miles in 2:00.56, slightly faster than the 2:00.77 set by multiple stakes winner Forbidden Apple, 90 minutes earlier in the Grade 1 Manhattan Handicap.

Stars come out for Long Branch

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Although the $100,000 Long Branch Breeders' Cup Stakes is typically regarded as a prep for the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational, this year's renewal is a showcase race in its own right.

Possibly the best field in the race's history will assemble on Sunday, including a showdown between two of the nation's top 3-year-olds, Burning Roma and Thunder Blitz. Add to that impressive colts This Fleet Is Due, Dayton Flyer, and Junior Deputy, and the Long Branch can rightly claim its significance in the 3-year-old divisional picture.

Unrullah Bull lukewarm choice in talent-laden stakes

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Unrullah Bull, a $25,000 claim who set a track record and won two allowance races over a handful of stakes winners this meet at Lone Star Park, could be a slight favorite in the $75,000 Bob Johnson Memorial on Sunday.

The one-mile race has drawn eight older horses, including local stakes winners Custer, Lights on Broadway, Captain Countdown, and T.B. Track Star, who won last year's Bob Johnson. "It's a wide open race," said Wes Hawley, who sends out allowance winner Five Straight. "I don't think there should be anybody less than 3-1."

Guidry's old agent helping Douglas challenge for lead

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Three weeks ago Mark Guidry threatened to turn the jockey's race here into a runaway. Now Guidry's lead is threatened by Arlington newcomer Rene Douglas, whose agent, Dennis Cooper, represented Guidry for almost 12 years.

But Guidry, a perennial leading rider in Chicago, replaced Cooper shortly before the Arlington meet began with Ronnie Ebanks. Cooper says he found out about the move when he read it in a local newspaper.

Riboletta comeback called off

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - An attempted racing comeback by Riboletta, the champion 2000 older filly or mare, has ended because of a recurrence of the ankle injury that forced her initial retirement last fall, according to owner Aaron Jones.

Riboletta was put back in training with Eduardo Inda at Santa Anita in late May, approximately a month after she aborted a Forestry foal in Kentucky. A 6-year-old, Riboletta was one of the more prominent mares to be affected by the mare reproductive loss syndrome that plagued the Kentucky breeding industry this spring.

Tiznow full of vim and vigor

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Apparently, Tiznow could not wait to resume serious training at Santa Anita.

The 2000 Horse of the Year, Tiznow had his first recorded workout in nearly three months Friday, going three furlongs in 36.40 seconds. The workout came after several weeks of frustration for his connections as Tiznow fought through back and muscle problems that prevented him from starting at the Hollywood Park spring-summer meeting.

Friday's workout left trainer Jay Robbins ecstatic about the 4-year-old Tiznow's condition.

Juvenile a Del Mar preview

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Came Home is a better colt than when he won his maiden by eight lengths on June 3, trainer Paco Gonzalez says.

This is not good news for the connections of the five opponents who will face Came Home in Sunday's $100,000 Hollywood Juvenile Championship at Hollywood Park.

"He's a different horse," Gonzalez said. "He's all business now. The whole family is the same way."
