Molly's Wisdom should be much the best

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Molly's Wisdom towers over his seven rivals in Sunday's $133,500 Bull Page Stakes at Woodbine, and he should be odds-on in the race, a six-furlong dash for male Ontario-sired 2-year-olds.

Molly's Wisdom was the first winner for freshman sire Whiskey Wisdom, a Grade 3 winner whose only loss in six starts came in the 1997 Breeders' Cup Classic. Molly's Wisdom prevailed by a length in 59 seconds when he debuted in a five-furlong maiden special June 9, earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 72.

Flash recap: Hap wins Baruch at perfect distance

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - It's too bad for Hap that they'll be running the Breeders' Cup Mile this fall.

Now if it was the Breeders' Cup Mile and an Eighth, well, then Hap would be a mortal lock.

Hap stretched his perfect record at 1 1/8 miles on the turf to 7-for-7 by notching a 1 3/4-length victory in the $150,000 Bernard Baruch Handicap on Friday at Saratoga Race Course.

Friday's Saratoga mid-day report

If there's a Horseplayer's Heaven, then it would have to be filled

with days like Friday at Saratoga.

Bright sunshine. Beautiful blue skies. Cool, 71-degree temperatures,

with no humidity.

A fast track, albeit a "good" turf course.

A card that features a graded turf stakes and an allowance race that

includes the Kentucky Oaks winner.

If you love the game and can't savor a day like this, then may we

recommend Prozac.

Albert needs great Whitney

Michael J. Marten/Horsephotos
Jorge Chavez aboard Albert the Great, who has not been very lucky in Grade 1 races.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Like a meal that doesn't fully satisfy, Albert the Great's delicious victory in the Grade 2 Suburban Handicap earlier this month at Belmont left owner Tracy Farmer and trainer Nick Zito a little hungry.

Victory Ride back at best distance

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - No one was more surprised - or disheartened - with the outcome of last month's Grade 1 Acorn Stakes than trainer Rusty Arnold.

With Victory Ride coming off two dominating victories, Arnold did not think she could lose the Acorn despite her lack of seasoning. At the sixteenth pole, he had to feel even better as Victory Ride moved past Forest Secrets and into the lead. But Forest Secrets came back and nipped Victory Ride by a neck at odds of 50-1.

Irish Prize risks reputation in Read

Benoit & Associates
Irish Prize (right) seeks fourth straight stakes win in Saturday's Eddie Read Handicap.

DEL MAR, Calif. - In the last year, Irish Prize has gone from being a winner of two allowance races at Del Mar to the top turf miler in California.

On Saturday, Irish Prize starts as the favorite in the $400,000 Eddie Read Handicap, the top turf race of the Del Mar meeting. A victory would further enhance his reputation on a national basis as the build-up to the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships intensifies.

Modesty tops Million Preview Day

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Its relatively modest purse of $150,000 notwithstanding, the Modesty Handicap is the best race at Arlington Park Saturday. Dubbed Million Preview Day, an 11-race card here features two other stakes, the $250,000 Arlington Handicap and the $150,000 Round Table for 3-year-olds on dirt. With a deep field of 11, the Modesty surpasses its counterparts in quality and bet-ability.

Irish Line's first win can be a stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Glenn Magnusson, who is no stranger to winning a stakes race with a maiden, will try to turn the trick Saturday at Woodbine with Irish Line in the $134,625 Nandi, a six-furlong dash for Ontario-sired 2-year-old fillies.

Magnusson, who won the 1995 Nandi with first-time starter Northern Hilite, sent out Irish Line to finish second when she debuted over a sloppy track June 3. She was a flat third in another maiden special two weeks later, but is coming off a respectable third-place finish in the Shady Well Stakes for Canadian-breds.

Class drop could boost Polaire in Modesty

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Trainer Donald Burke shipped Falcon Flight here earlier in the month, and the horse responded with a sharp win in the Stars and Stripes Handicap. On Saturday, Burke hopes to be watching Polaire follow in Falcon Flight's footsteps when the mare starts in the Grade 3 Modesty Handicap at Arlington.

As usual, Frankel holds turf ace

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Even at Arlington, you can't escape the long shadow trainer Bobby Frankel casts in graded turf stakes. Beau Greely, the Southern California-based trainer, has two horses entered in Saturday's $250,000 Arlington Handicap, and just like at home Greely has to beat Frankel, who has sent El Gran Papa for the Grade 3 race.
