Barbara D. Livingston
Cherie DeVaux, a former assistant to Chad Brown, won races with the 2-year-old fillies Veruca and Bayerness at Churchill Downs on Saturday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Cherie DeVaux didn’t let a little rain take away her joy. DeVaux posted the first two-win day of her nascent training career amid a Saturday deluge at Churchill when the 2-year-old fillies Veruca and Bayerness rallied to win races some 90 minutes apart.

“They both acted like they had a lot of talent when I first got them in,” said DeVaux, who began her solo career in May 2018 after nearly eight years as an assistant to Chad Brown. “They trained together into this race, so it was really nice to see the way they both performed.”

Oscar Dominguez (red and white blinkers) was up to win Sunday's Hollywood Turf Cup by a neck.

DEL MAR, Calif. – This was a weekend for ex-claimers to shine in turf marathon stakes at Del Mar.

Saturday, the former $8,000 claimer Zuzanna won the Grade 3 Red Carpet Handicap for fillies and mares at 1 3/8 miles on turf. Sunday, Oscar Dominguez, claimed four times in 2018 for $40,000 and earlier this year for that amount, won his first stakes in the Grade 2 Hollywood Turf Cup at 1 1/2 miles.

Trainer Richard Baltas credited Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez for the victory with Oscar Dominguez. The two barely had a strategy talk before the race, Velazquez said.
