Rain creates spot for dirt fillies

MIAMI - Opportunities for older fillies and mares in the handicap division at Calder are few and far between for the remainder of the summer, so when one pops up, even unexpectedly, a trainer has to take advantage of the situation. That's why Bill Kaplan and Marty Wolfson have entered Castlebrook and Coolbythepool in Sunday's $50,000 Liberada Handicap.

Trajectory on target in Seagram

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Guided Tour was a little-known allowance runner from Kentucky before he used a win in the 2000 Seagram Cup Stakes as a springboard toward much bigger accomplishments.

Trainer Graham Motion is hoping that Trajectory can do the same after Sunday's running of that 1 1/16-mile main track event at Woodbine.

"Hopefully, he's an up-and-coming horse," said Motion, who is based at Delaware Park. "He ran some very good races last year."

Oasis in a green desert

Prescott Valley, Ariz. - Jim Grundy stands in the clubhouse overlooking his new track, Yavapai Downs, like a father looking at his new child. At the same time he is beaming with pride, he is frantically keeping an eye out for danger.

"I couldn't be more proud," said Grundy, general manager of the mile racetrack that opened here May 26. "We took a project that should have taken us two years to complete and did it in 13 months," he said.

Advantage is wild card in Governors Cap

AUBURN, Wash. - Northwest fans have largely been spared the difficulties of handicapping foreign horses making their first starts in the United States, at least insofar as live racing is concerned. But that changes on Sunday when the Chilean-bred Advantage starts in the 6 1/2-furlong Governors Handicap at Emerald Downs.

A P Valentine, under Lorna Vincent, gallops at Saratoga in preparation for the Jim Dandy, his first race since finishing second in the Belmont.
