Magna's influence shows as meet opens

Remington Park in Oklahoma City will feel the influence of its parent company, Magna Entertainment, more than ever during its summer-fall Thoroughbred meet, which opens Saturday night. The 59-day season runs through Nov. 24.

Magna, which purchased Remington in October 1999, has shortened the meet from the awarded 68 by dropping some Mondays; converted the racing schedule to mostly nights; introduced a new way of taking entries; and has changed the name of the track's longtime signature race, the Grade 3 $300,000 Remington Park Derby, to the Oklahoma Derby.

Blissful Kiss tops series opener

MIAMI - Saturday's opening leg of the Florida Stallion Series consists of the Dr. Fager and Desert Vixen Stakes, each for 2-year-olds at six furlongs and for a $75,000 purse at Calder. But the similarities end there.

The Desert Vixen, the filly division, is dominated by stakes winner Blissful Kiss and the undefeated Pharmstar and drew a field of only seven. The Dr. Fager for colts and geldings division is so wide open that 18 horses were entered, forcing racing secretary Bob Umphrey to split the Dr. Fager for the first time since 1991.

Allowance sprint race fits Trippi's needs

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Plagued by foot problems for the first half of the year, Trippi looks to start the second half of his season on a winning note when he heads a five-horse field entered in a classified allowance race at six furlongs on Saturday at Saratoga.

It will be Trippi's first start since May 28, when he finished sixth in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap. Trainer Todd Pletcher is hoping to use Saturday's allowance as a prep for the Grade 1 Forego Handicap here on Sept. 1.

Turf, distance suit 'Fame'

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - With class a rare commodity in Saturday's Breeders' Stakes, the horse who is best-suited to the distance and surface should carry the day.

That's why it could be a mistake to overlook Vie for Fame, who will be making his stakes debut in the 1 1/2-mile turf feature for owner Ivan Dalos and trainer David Bell.

Saratoga Games looks like a lock

Judging by the ease of his last two wins, Saratoga Games should toy with his competition in Saturday's $75,000 Vincent A. Moscarelli Memorial at Delaware Park.

Saratoga Games meets five other 3-year-olds in the 1 1/8-mile Moscarelli.

Tony Dutrow trains the improving Saratoga Games, a winner of his last three starts. Those wins include a romp by 8 3/4 lengths in the Honor Guard and a 2 1/2-length score in the Finney Stakes, both run at Pimlico at the Moscarelli distance.

Iwinski having babies

Allen Iwinski is best known as a trainer who excels at claiming horses. This season, however, Iwinski is expanding his horizons with a group of 2-year-olds.

Haunted Lass, a leading candidate for Monday's $75,000 Everget Stakes at Delaware Park for 2-year-old fillies, is a good example how Iwinski's barn is focusing more on developing juvenile runners.

Nice spot on turf for Super Tuesday

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Super Tuesday, winner of the California Sires Stakes at Hollywood, looks tough to beat when she returns to northern California to head a field of seven in the $40,000 Floral Fiesta Stakes for 3-year-olds at a mile on the turf Saturday at the Bay Meadows Fair.

Super Tuesday, trained by Dean Pederson, has much in her favor. She has as much class as any of her foes, is in sharp form, and has been ultra-consistent since racing poorly in her career debut. Equally important, she has proved that she likes the turf while several of her rivals have never raced on it.

Retama Park

Nat's Big Party and Gold Nugget, two former claiming horses who have become regional stakes winners, meet in the $50,000 Retama Turf Cup at Retama Park near San Antonio.

The field for the 1 1/16-mile turf race is completed by Kris Havingfunnow, winner of last year's $100,000 El Joven over the Retama Park turf; Dynaboy, who will be coupled with Gold Nugget; Colonial Power, an allowance winner at this distance two starts ago at Lone Star Park near Dallas; and allowance performers Frankly Classic and Quiet Man.

Thistledown

NORTH RANDALL, Ohio - Turkowar will attempt to stretch his winning streak to four races while facing 10 Ohio-bred 3-year-old peers in the $40,000, six-furlong, North Randall Stakes at Thistledown.

In his last race, July 22, he drew off to a 4 3/4-length tally in River Downs's 1 1/16-mile Horizon Stakes. Before that he reeled off wins in two allowance sprints at Thistledown. Under the allowance conditions of the race, Turkowar is co-highweighted at 119 pounds and Tony Caminita will ride for trainer Joe Shuman.
