Longtime Sherlock employee Alvarez takes over late trainer's stable

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Gary Sherlock died on Dec. 29. His longtime assistant Edwin Alvarez is now training the stable.

ARCADIA, Calif. – In 2019, the unraced 2-year-old filly Time for Sally caught the attention of trainer Gary Sherlock on a visit to breeder Terry Lovingier’s Southern California farm.

“He said, ‘This is the best filly,’ ” Edwin Alvarez recalled on Wednesday.

Alvarez was standing outside of Barn 99 on the Santa Anita backstretch, remembering the early encounter he and Sherlock had with Time for Sally.

Alvarez worked for Sherlock for 15 years until the trainer’s death on Dec. 29 from cancer. Alvarez has since taken over the 10-horse stable.

Asmussen pointing three horses to Lecomte Stakes

Michael Burns
Halo Again, winner of the Coronation Futurity at Woodbine, will make his 3-year-old debut in the Lecomte.

Since Steve Asmussen trains a full barn of horses through late autumn, winter, and early spring at Fair Grounds, and the Asmussen stable is heavily populated by talented young stock, you might guess that Asmussen has found plenty of success in the Lecomte Stakes, Fair Grounds’ first dirt-route stakes for 3-year-olds.

That would be incorrect. Asmussen hasn’t won the Lecomte since Z Fortune captured the 2008 renewal, but he plans to start three horses in the 2020 Lecomte, the anchor of Fair Grounds’ multi-stakes card on Jan. 18.

Pay Any Price, now 10, wins a Jan. 5 allowance at Gulfstream, his first start since May.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Most trainers aren’t at a loss for words after winning a big race. But one trainer who could barely speak in the winner’s circle was Georgina Baxter, who rendered herself hoarse cheering her star Pay Any Price to victory in his first start since returning from a 7 1/2-month layoff in Sunday afternoon’s co-featured allowance race going five furlongs on the turf. The win was the 18th in 29 career starts for the course record-holder, who turned 10 last Wednesday.
