A North East Bound runaway

North East Bound wins the Canadian Turf - forced onto the main track - by 4 3/4 lengths.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Rain or shine, turf or dirt, if anyone deserved to win Saturday's $150,000 it was North East Bound.

After suffering heartbreaking setbacks, by a head in the Appleton Handicap and a neck in the Ft. Lauderdale Handicap, North East Bound left little doubt who was best in the Canadian. Leading throughout before drawing off to a 4 3/4-length victory over Capsized and a field that scratched down to four after the race was taken off the turf and switched to a sloppy main track because of heavy rain.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Three strikes and you're out!

Trainer Shug McGaughey's attempt to launch Saarland's 3-year-old campaign in a seven-furlong allowance dash failed for the third straight time Saturday as the race scheduled for Monday again died with only three names in the box.

"I can't believe they couldn't make the race go," said McGaughey, "that they couldn't get a couple of horses who have been running for $30,000 or $40,000 to go in there to fill it."
