Menacing Dennis perfect in junior leagues

ARCADIA, Calif. - The lure of the Triple Crown has yet to be felt by the connections of Menacing Dennis, who, with a victory in an allowance race on Wednesday at Santa Anita, is unbeaten in two starts.

Making his first start since winning a maiden race at Monmouth Park last July, Menacing Dennis ran six furlongs in 1:10, beating longtime leader True Monarch by two lengths.

The allowance race was a prep for the $100,000 Zany Tactics Stakes for California-bred 3-year-olds over 6 1/2 furlongs on April 7 and not a major prep for the Kentucky Derby, trainer Jeff Bonde said.

Captain Squire not for sale this time

ALBANY, Calif. - Trainer Jeff Mullins is done gambling with Captain Squire, who will bring a three-race winning streak into Saturday's El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields.

Mullins entered Captain Squire in a pair of $32,000 maiden claimers and a $62,500 claiming race for his third start. He breathes a sigh of relief now that Captain Squire, a gelded son of Flying Chevron, was not claimed.

"We always knew he was a nice horse," Mullins said. "You didn't have to have him race. Just watching him train, you knew he was a racehorse."
