Come Dancing sent to Oaklawn for first start of the year; Lukas will train

Debra A. Roma
Trainer Carlos Martin has sent Come Dancing to D. Wayne Lukas. She will run in either the Apple Blossom Handicap or against males in the Count Fleet Handicap.

Come Dancing, the Grade 1 Ballerina winner, arrived at Oaklawn Park last Thursday and is being pointed to one of two spots for her seasonal debut, trainer Carlos Martin said Monday.

While the Grade 1, $600,000 Apple Blossom Handicap at 1 1/16 miles is the main target, Martin said Come Dancing also will be nominated to the Grade 3, $350,000 Count Fleet Handicap at six furlongs. Both races are scheduled for April 18. The Count Fleet would mean taking on males, something Come Dancing has not yet done.

With Santa Anita closed, Golden Gate entries may benefit

Barbara D. Livingston
Golden Gate Fields opens its 2017-18 winter-spring meet on Dec. 26.

If Santa Anita continues to remain closed because of the coronavirus outbreak, Southern California-based horses will likely race in greater numbers at Golden Gate Fields in Northern California.

Friday, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health ordered the closure of Santa Anita, deeming the racetrack a non-essential business. Only businesses deemed essential are allowed to conduct business during the virus outbreak. The decision was made less than an hour before the day’s first race.

Speedy Frank's Rockette set for Oaklawn debut

Ronnie Betor
Frank's Rockette is set to make her Oaklawn Park debut in the Purple Martin Stakes on Saturday.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Frank Fletcher has the fastest 3-year-old filly in the land based on Beyer Speed Figures and she’s coming to his home track of Oaklawn Park.

Frank’s Rockette earned a Beyer of 98 for her win in the $75,000 Any Limit on Feb. 22 at Gulfsetream Park. The number is at least four points higher than any other Beyer earned by a 3-year-old filly so far this year.

It figures to make her the favorite for the $100,000 Purple Martin Stakes here on Saturday.

Trainers of contenders hope scheduled stakes can proceed at Santa Anita

Emily Shields
Venetian Harbor goes wire to wire under Flavien Prat to win the Grade 2 Las Virgenes Stakes by 9 1/4 lengths on Saturday at Santa Anita.

The filly who won the 2019 Santa Anita Oaks and the likely favorite for this year’s race each worked a half-mile in 46.80 seconds at Santa Anita on Sunday.

But with Santa Anita closed for racing indefinitely because of the coronavirus pandemic, there is a question whether Bellafina, who won last year’s Santa Anita Oaks, and Venetian Harbor, who won the Grade 2 Las Virgenes Stakes on Feb. 8, will have the chance to race soon. The Santa Anita Oaks is scheduled for Saturday.

Tiz the Law facing uncertain path after Florida Derby success

Tiz the Law earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 96 for his win Saturday in the Grade 1 Florida Derby.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – As a final Kentucky Derby prep, Tiz the Law’s 4 1/4 length triumph in Saturday’s Grade 1 Curlin Florida Derby would have been about as good as it gets under normal circumstances. That decisive yet not overly taxing victory came on the heels of an eight-week layoff that would likely have had the once-beaten New York-bred primed for his peak performance five weeks down the road on Derby day.

Decorated Invader earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 88 for his win Saturday in the Cutler Bay Stakes.

Following Decorated Invader's 1 1/4-length victory in Saturday’s $100,000 Cutler Bay Stakes going a mile, trainer Christophe Clement said Sunday he hopes to get the chance to stretch the 3-year-old out in distance later this year, with New York’s Turf Triple for 3-year-olds in mind.

“If he stays, he stays, if not we can cut back to a mile in a race like the Secretariat,” Clement said, referring to a one-mile race typically run at Arlington Park in August.

Derbe Glass/Coglianese Photos
Vekoma's connections hope to target Grade 1 events later this year.

Vekoma, last year’s Grade 2 Blue Grass Stakes winner, made a solid return to the races, winning the listed Sir Shackleton Stakes by 3 3/4 lengths. He covered seven furlongs in 1:21.92 and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 102, a career best.

Trainer George Weaver said his goal is to make Vekoma a Grade 1 winner this year. When and where that attempt will come is anybody’s guess.

Mean Mary to be freshened with eye to summer

Derbe Glass/Coglianese Photos
Mean Mary earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 97 for her victory in Saturday's Grade 3 Orchid Stakes.

Trainer Graham Motion said he won’t mind giving Mean Mary a little bit of a break following her one-length victory in Saturday’s Grade 3, $100,000 Orchid Stakes, her third victory in as many starts at the meet.

“She had five races in succession since [September], if I want to have her around for the end of this year, I want to have her fresh that’s why I backed off her after the last race,” said Motion, referring to her three-length in the Grade 3 La Prevoyante on Jan. 25.

McPeek likes new timing of Kentucky Oaks for Swiss Skydiver

Lauren King/Coglianese Photos
Swiss Skydiver will be freshened before her next start.

The rescheduling of the Kentucky Oaks from May 1 to Sept. 4 works for trainer Ken McPeek when it comes to Swiss Skydiver.

By virtue of her front-running victory in Saturday’s Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks, Swiss Skydiver earned her spot in the Kentucky Oaks starting gate. With Swiss Skydiver having already made starts this year at three different venues, McPeek said he plans to freshen his filly until such time as he knows a stakes schedule moving forward.

The coronavirus pandemic has caused many tracks to cancel or postpone major stakes races throughout the country.
