Your Out tries Obeah distance

Allen's Prospect is considered a sire who produces good sprinters, not long-distance runners. Since 4-year-old filly Your Out is a daughter of Allen's Prospect, trainer H. Graham Motion thought the 1 1/4 miles of the Delaware Handicap would be beyond her range.

But now that Your Out has learned to rate, Motion's not so certain the 10-furlong Delaware is too long.

Saturday's $100,000 Obeah Stakes at Delaware Park, a 1 1/8-mile prep for next month's $600,000 Delaware Handicap, will help Motion make up his mind whether to give Your Out a shot in the Grade 3 race on July 21.

Injury not stopping Albarado this time

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Four years ago at the All-Star Jockey Championship, winning jockey Shane Sellers dedicated his victory to his injured comrade, Robby Albarado, who just days before had suffered a skull fracture in a spill at Churchill Downs.

The gesture was widely lauded, for it was at the core of what the Jockeys' Guild, one of the major sponsors of the All-Star event, is all about - riders helping riders.

May the best rider win

Chris McCarron, who is retiring Sunday, takes on fellow Hall of Famers Russell Baze and Laffit Pincay Jr. in the All-Star Jockey Championship.

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - In many ways, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association All-Star Jockey Championship at Lone Star Park on Friday night defines riders the way the Breeders' Cup defines horses. It brings together some of the best jockeys from around the country, pits them against each other on one track for one night, and in the end, a champion emerges.

The All-Star Jockey Championship has been won by Gary Stevens, Shane Sellers, Laffit Pincay Jr., Edgar Prado, and Jerry Bailey. This year, win or lose, the man of the hour will be Chris McCarron.

Jealous Forum not yet in '02 stride

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Jealous Forum, one of the top 2-year-old fillies at Woodbine in 2001, has struggled this season but will try to get back in the groove when she faces older fillies and mares in Friday's $74,400 headliner.

A field of six will line up in the $62,500 allowance/optional claimer, which will be run at 1 1/16 miles.

Jealous Forum looked to have a world of potential when she captured the My Dear Stakes here in the spring of 2001. She subsequently ran second in the Ontario Debutante Stakes and fourth in the Grade 3 Natalma Stakes on turf.

Short fields, but not for too long

EDMONTON, Alberta - It should come as no surprise that opening weekend at Northlands Park would be a little short on horseflesh.

Every year, the short time between the end of the spring meet at Stampede Park, which came last Sunday, and the opening of the summer meet here leaves the stalls only partially filled.

The 68-day Northlands meet opens Friday with an eight-race card that attracted a total of 58 entrants.

Price may be enticing on 'Miss'

AUBURN, Wash. - Out of Bounds Miss has proven to be a value-seeking bettor's best friend through her first nine starts, winning five times without ever having been favored. She will try to improve upon that record in Friday's best race at Emerald Downs, a 6 1/2-furlong event for $20,000 fillies and mares.

Sluggish Take Charge Lady to get month on the farm

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Take Charge Lady has been taken out of training for about 30 days primarily because she had been sluggish since she won her last start, the May 25 Dogwood Stakes, trainer Ken McPeek said Wednesday at Churchill Downs.

Take Charge Lady will be turned out at Longfield Farm just outside of Louisville, then brought back into training to point for a fall campaign, said McPeek.

Tracemark fits Dollase's label of overachiever

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - When Tracemark joined trainer Craig Dollase's stable at the start of the year, it did not seem likely that the gelding would be running in important 3-year-old stakes by the spring.

Dollase was just hoping Tracemark would win a race. Five months later, Tracemark has done so much more. He won the California Derby at Bay Meadows and finished second in the Grade 3 Lone Star Derby.

Dozen pieces in turf puzzler

ELMONT, N.Y. - Handicappers will have their work cut out for them as they sort through the past performances of an evenly matched field of grass runners in Friday's featured eighth race on the sunset racing card.

Twelve older males drew into the main body of the race, plus there's one also eligible, Man From Wicklow. There are three main track only horses, Top Bunk, Pleasant Breeze, and U. S. Gold.

The allowance race, which carries a $56,000 purse, will be run at 1 1/4 miles over the inner turf. Post time is 6:36 p.m. Eastern.
