Philadelphia jockey unscathed

NEW YORK - Jockey Antonio Pena was back breezing horses on Thursday morning after narrowly escaping serious injury in a spill in Tuesday's fifth race at Philadelphia Park.

After the spill, Pena's condition appeared grave, and he needed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the way to the hospital. Once there, doctors said they feared he had a cervical spinal injury.

Pena was unseated at the start of a six-furlong sprint and was apparently kicked or kneed in the head by his horse just after he fell.

Mott does it again at the Rock

SALEM, N.H. - Stylish rolled to a four-length victory over Sword Princess and defending champ Step With Style in the $75,000 Rockingham Breeders' Cup Handicap, giving trainer Bill Mott a third straight stakes victory this meet.

Herb Castillo Jr. rode Stylish when Julian Pimentel, who was originally named on the horse, didn't make the trip from Monmouth Park.

Stylish kicked clear in the final furlong in withering heat and humidity to win her second stakes this year. She covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.93 over a firm turf course.

Robertson king of Canterbury turf

SHAKOPEE, Minn. - Hugh Robertson's stable has been tough to beat in stakes over the Canterbury Park turf course this meet. His Chicago-based outfit has always maintained a presence at Canterbury, but this season its presence has been magnified as Robertson has won three of the first four grass stakes offered at the meet.

Mac Robertson, who oversees his father's Canterbury string, will have his hands full Saturday after entering three horses in the $35,000 Minnesota HBPA Mile for fillies and mares on the turf.

Thistledown: Bad is good

Dinkers Millennium closed a gap through the stretch to finish third, three-quarters of a length in front of fourth-place finisher Mary's Lord. Eight Ohio-breds ran in the 1 1/8-mile race.

Another era, another Klein

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Michael Klein was on the sidelines in the 1980's when his colorful father, Eugene, stormed his way through Thoroughbred racing, campaigning a stable that included six champions. At the time, he was more interested in the stock market than bloodstock.

That changed this year. On Saturday, Michael Klein will have his first starter when Dublino runs for a partnership in the newly formed $500,000 American Oaks at Hollywood Park.

McAnally drought can end at last

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - In a little more than 90 seconds on Saturday, Innit or Old Money can end months of disappointment for trainer Ron McAnally with a victory in the $100,000 Royal Heroine Stakes at Hollywood Park.

Both have won important stakes previously - Innit in the Grade 2 Honeymoon Handicap in 2001; Old Money in three major stakes in Australia in 2000 - but have not shown that form recently.

Innit did not start from August 2001 to May 26 because of an ankle injury. In her comeback, she finished fourth in an allowance race on turf as a heavy favorite.

Home not so sweet for Stevens

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Gary Stevens rode two winners from two mounts on Wednesday, his first multi-win day of the Hollywood Park meeting. It was no cause for celebration for the Hall of Fame jockey.

Through Wednesday, Stevens, 39, had just three wins from 47 mounts at Hollywood Park, with 18 second- or third-place finishes. During the last few months, he has spent more time traveling to major stakes around the nation, and in May to Singapore, than riding at his base in Southern California.
