Disturbingthepeace pulls upset in Triple Bend

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - With a light weight assignment and an uncontested lead, Disturbingthepeace pulled an upset in Saturday's $300,000 at Hollywood Park.

Making his stakes debut, Disturbingthepeace beat a strong field in the Grade 2 Triple Bend that included 2002 stakes winners D'Wildcat, Mellow Fellow and Kona Gold, the 2000 champion sprinter who finished sixth as the 126-pound topweight and 4-5 favorite.

None challenged Disturbingthepeace, who was ridden by Victor Espinoza and carried 113 pounds.

Gygistar wins Dwyer Stakes

ELMONT, N.Y. - Gygistar won Sunday's $150,000 at Belmont Park, but still left questions about his ability to run a distance of ground.

Inheriting the lead when expected pace-setter Yankee Gentleman broke awkwardly, Gygistar found himself alone on the front end through a relatively easy half-mile and held on for a one-half length victory over the hard-charging Nothing Flat. It was five lengths back to American Style. The second and third-place finishers are trained by Nick Zito.

Clearly a Queen best in Matchmaker

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Clearly a Queen was a Grade 3 winner last year, but seeming lost a step before moving to the barn of Terri Pompay at Monmouth this summer. However, Clearly a Queen has thrived at Monmouth and continued her success here Sunday with a powerful victory in the Grade 3, $100,000 Matchmaker Handicap for fillies and mares on the turf.

Appleby Gardens takes Shady Well

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - First-time starter Appleby Gardens prevailed as the favorite in Sunday's $165,450 Shady Well Stakes, a 5 1/2-furlong dash for Canadian-bred 2-year-old fillies.

Appleby Gardens tracked the early leaders on the outside under Robert Landry, and hit the front early in the stretch. Mountain Dawn rallied along the rail and drew evenly with her in mid-stretch, but Appleby Gardens fought back to win by a head.

Mr. John upsets Cornhusker

ALTOONA, Iowa - Mr. John received a perfect stalking trip under Mark Guidry and rallied for a 2 1/4-length upset win in Saturday's Grade 3 Cornhusker Breeders' Cup Handicap at Prairie Meadows.

Mr. John, who added blinkers for the Cornhusker, broke alertly but settled off of Deferred Comp and Slider who hooked up in a speed duel through a half mile run in 46.61 seconds. Slider put away Deferred Comp and went clear entering the second turn of the 1 1/8-mile event.

Megahertz takes American Oaks

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - The first running of the $500,000 American Oaks at Hollywood Park on Saturday was decided in the steward's room.

Megahertz, who finished second, was promoted to first after Dublino was ruled to have caused interference in the stretch.

Replays showed that Dublino, ridden by Kent Desormeaux, drifted out in the stretch and into the path of Megahertz, who was ridden by Alex Solis.

Megahertz finished a half-length behind Dublino.

"It's just too bad I didn't straighten her out quick enough," Desormeaux said.

Walk In The Snow takes Arcadia

Bossier City, La - Rallying strongly from off the pace, Ginger A. Taylor's Walk In The Snow kicked down favored Hail The Bag to win Saturday's Arcadia Stakes by a neck. Longshot Won Better overcame traffic problems early in theturn and also turned in a late charge to annex the show.

Bumped soundly at the start, Guy Smith settled Walk In The Snow ($5.60) well off the pace before beginning his advance from between rivals exiting the turn. The winner finished with a flourish to close a sizeable late gap in a final time of 1:10.62 for the six furlongs over a fast track.

E Dubai steals Suburban

E Dubai and John Velazquez win the Grade 2 Suburban on Saturday. Earlier in the day, Velazquez won the Grade 1 Prioress aboard Carson Hollow.

ELMONT, N.Y. - E Dubai, a lightly raced son of Mr. Prospector who wasn't even supposed to run in the race, led every step of the way under John Velazquez to steal Saturday's $500,000 by three-quarters of a length before 8,611 at Belmont Park.

Lido Palace, making his first start since February, finished second in the Grade 2 Suburban for the second straight year, a length in front of even-money favorite Macho Uno. Completing the order of finish were Evening Attire, Pure Prize, Country Be Gold, and Pleasant Breeze.

With Anticipation wins U.N. - for keeps

OCEANPORT, N.J. - With Anticipation, Denon, and Sarafan were noses apart with a furlong to go in the Grade 1, $500,000 at Monmouth Park on Saturday, but it was the oldest member of the trio, the 7-year-old With Anticipation, who outlasted his younger rivals to set a new course record.

With Anticipation, with Pat Day aboard, covered 11 furlongs over a firm turf course in 2:12.81. The United Nations win was a kind of redemption for With Anticipation, who was disqualified and placed second for bumping Senure in deep stretch in the 2001 running.

Cetewayo sets record from 20 lengths behind

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Cetewayo demonstrated again Saturday what an exceptional old racehorse looks like.

Cetewayo, who won a Grade 1 race to start his 8-year-old season, came from 20 lengths behind to set a course record while winning the Grade 3 Stars and Stripes Breeders' Cup Handicap at Arlington. Rallying relentlessly from the half-mile pole home, Cetewayo was up by a neck over Private Son, who just missed in his first turf stakes try.
