Silent Charge ready to take on open company

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Your Illinois-bred gets a maiden race and two allowance conditions, then it's out of statebred company and into the big, scary world of open racing. It's a tough jump for a horse to make, and he needs a little luck to do it.

But how much luck does has trainer Christine Janks have left?

She used much of it Sunday, when Janks won three times in the first five races.

Windfall enables purse hike

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Purses at Hastings Park are expected to jump by roughly 10 percent in the near future. One reason for the increase is that business has been good since the Woodbine Entertainment Group took over the track on May 1. The per-race average handle on live racing has increased by around 20 percent, and while attendance figures haven't been kept since free admission was introduced, it is clear that many more people are attending the races and the mood at the track is buoyant.

Another reason for the increase is more than $2 million in "found money."

They'll chase Royal Brittany

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan - Friday night's $6,500 James Leakos Sophomore is a lopsided affair: Royal Brittany takes on five apparently overmatched foes in the one-mile stakes for Saskatchewan-bred 3-year-old fillies.

Sporting two wins and four seconds from six lifetime starts, Royal Brittany towers over her opponents, who total just three wins from 25 combined appearances.

Royal Brittany, owned by Ed, Don, and Ken Heuchert, won both the Saskatchewan Futurity for fillies and the Larry Lashyn Futurity last year.

Hot Market has speed to burn

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Hot Market can earn a trip to the $250,000 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar next month with a victory in a $55,000 allowance race at Hollywood Park on Thursday.

Since early April, the 4-year-old Hot Market has shown remarkable improvement, winning two allowance races over 1 1/16 miles and finishing third in another to Palmeiro, who later won the All-American Handicap at Bay Meadows.

A winner in his last start, June 5, Hot Market is the probable favorite in Thursday's third race, but the distance of 7 1/2 furlongs is a worry for trainer Craig Lewis.
