It's Alberta breeding's big day

EDMONTON, Alberta - Saturday's sixth annual Alberta Fall Classic Day at Northlands Park showcases this province's breeding industry.

There are seven stakes races on the card, offering a total of more than $300,000 in purse money for the Alberta-bred contestants.

Five winners from the 2001 Classics Day are expected to run, including the winners of last year's 2-year-old races. They are Exclusive Banker, who won the Alberta Premier's Futurity and now shoots for the Beaufort Stakes, and Reeyre, winner of the Sturgeon River who now is in the Alberta Oaks.

Futurity field: Everybody wants in

AUBURN, Wash. - Will it be the Filly Futurity?

Sunday's $100,000 Gottstein Futurity at 1 1/16 miles was supposed to feature the sixth and final meeting of Knightsbridge Road and Bub, the preeminent juveniles on the grounds, but that showdown will have to wait.

Knightsbridge Road was declared out of the race at midweek when a fever he contracted Tuesday failed to subside, while Bub, who won his third stakes race of the season in the one-mile WTBA Lads on Aug. 24, will be entered but may not run.

Kives goes for repeat

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Owner Phil Kives, who won last year's $35,000 Buffalo Stakes with Rare Deputy, will have the favorites to win Sunday's renewal. Air Driver and Only You and I, who will run as separate betting interests, will carry the colors of Kives's K-5 Stable.

The one-mile Buffalo, restricted to Manitoba bred 2-year-olds, has attracted a field of nine.

Gaskin rides winning career path

FORT ERIE, Ontario - Jockey Tyler Gaskin rode his first stakes winner Sept. 2, aboard Get Down Wolfie in the Puss N Boots at Fort Erie.

"To win a stakes race in my second year was just the most exciting thing," said Gaskin, who was in third place in the Fort Erie standings with 62 wins heading into this weekend. "I remember it all, but it's still blurry.

"You need the right breaks to work out for you. And I've been fortunate, in that everything I needed to go my way has sort of gone my way."

Ariel's Melody runs in family

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Aug. 5 had to be a sentimental day for owner Connie Attard. It was her first visit to Woodbine since the death last fall of her husband, trainer Joe Attard, and she won the Victoriana Stakes with Ariel's Melody, a filly Joe once trained.

Ariel's Melody, who is now trained by Joe and Connie's son Steve, should be well backed in Sunday's La Prevoyante Stakes, for Ontario-sired 3-year-old fillies. Five others were entered in the one-mile grass race, worth $129,625.

Peery high on his filly in stakes

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Sunday's $60,000-added Courtship Stakes at Bay Meadows appears to be anything but a walkover.

The 5 1/2-furlong race for 2-year-old fillies attracted six runners. Often, 2-year-old races seem to have one standout, but the Courtship has a contentious field.

From the rail out, the runners are Tracmac, Tale of a Dream, Global Finance, Western Dame, Slewby's Secret, and She'sgotthekey.

Spunky Gal, dead fit, goes for hot trainer

POMONA, Calif. - One of the hottest trainers in Southern California entered the sharpest horse in the the $50,000 E.B. Johnston Stakes at Fairplex Park. Vladimir Cerin, who ended Del Mar by winning with six of his last 11 starters, starts Spunky Gal in the 1 1/16-mile stake for fillies and mares.

"If she has a chance to be stakes placed, I'm definitely running," Cerin said.

Far more horses than fans

Largely because its locale is so far removed from major population centers, Kentucky Downs does not draw large crowds during its annual seven-day fall meet. Nashville, located some 35 miles to the south, is the only big city within easy driving distance of the track, a geographic fact that severely limits attendance.

Sam-Son pair cranks up for International

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Sam-Son Farm didn't make much of an impact on last Sunday's Atto Mile, with Strut the Stage finishing seventh and Quiet Resolve 11th in the field of 13.

Now the perennial powerhouse is turning its attention to the Grade 1, $1.5 million Canadian International, a 1 1/2-mile turf race for 3-year-olds and up here Sept. 29.

Sam-Son has five horses nominated, but trainer Mark Frostad will call upon Full of Wonder and Portcullis to fly the Canadian flag in the International.
