Bonapaw cruises home

Under a confident ride by Gerard Melancon, Bonapaw takes the Vosburgh Stakes. It would cost $200,000 to supplement him to the Breeders' Cup.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Bonapaw used his brilliant speed Saturday to win his first Grade 1 race and become a millionaire. But his connections are in no hurry to give some of that money back to make the 6-year-old gelding eligible for next month's Breeders' Cup Sprint.

Without ever feeling the leather of jockey Gerard Melancon's whip, Bonapaw led from the start and cruised to a 2 1/2-length victory in the $300,000 Vosburgh Stakes before 8,542 at Belmont Park. After running a half-mile in a relatively easy 45.10 seconds, Bonapaw covered the seven furlongs in 1:22.34 and returned $5.10.

Florida's top 2yo filly is obvious

MIAMI, Fla. - Ivanavinalot left little doubt she is the premier 2-year-old filly on the grounds at Calder this summer by registering a convincing five-length victory over Dakota Light in Saturday's $100,000 Brave Raj Stakes.

Ivanavinalot, a daughter of West Acre who was bred by owner Gil Campbell, disputed the pace from the outset of the mile and 70-yard Brave Raj, shook free into the stretch, and then extended her advantage despite drifting steadily through the final furlong.

Meadowlands: Babae takes Violet

Trainer Frank Alexander chose to run Babae in Friday night's Grade 3 Violet Handicap at The Meadowlands rather than Saturday's Noble Damsel at Belmont Park, partly because of the $150,000 purse, but also because he knew jockey Jorge Chavez would accept the mount.

Alexander knew what he was doing.
