ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Two weeks after his untimely scratch at Turfway Park, Tenpins scored a game victory over Generous Rosi in the Grade 3, $400,000 on Sunday at Arlington.
Tenpins set a track record of 1:55.07 for 1 3/16 miles, racing gamely through the stretch under Robby Albarado to hold of Generous Rosi, who led for most of the Washington Park and came back bravely after being passed in the upper stretch.
ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Irish invader Ballingarry relished the yielding turf and beat his eight opponents with ease in Sunday's Grade 1, $1.5 million , the eighth leg of the 2002 World Series Racing Championship.
Ballingarry was world renowned trainer Aidan O'Brien's first Woodbine starter. It was also the first Woodbine mount for jockey Mick Kinane, who said the 3-year-old son of Sadler's Wells was very professional in winning the mile and a half event, with an ideal stalking trip near front-running Yavana's Pace.
Bossier City, La. - Mekko Hokte took advantage of a spirited duel between favored Hannah's Royalrock and Hadif's Allstar and rallied from off the pace under Tim Doocy to prevail by a head over Hadif's Allstar in Sunday's $30,000 Delta Miss Stakes at Louisiana Downs. Obligatory was four lengths further back in third, followed by a tiring Hannah's Royalrock.
ELMONT, N.Y. - As good as Funny Cide looked winning his debut by 14 3/4 lengths, he looked even better winning Sunday's $83,975 Bertram F. Bongard Stakes at Belmont Park.
Funny Cide, with Jose Santos in the saddle, was a nine-length winner of the Bongard for 2-year-old New York-breds. The winner covered the seven furlongs in a quick 1:22.95 - a stakes record - over a fast track.
Spite the Devil finished second, two lengths in front of Infinite Justice. Storm Cadet, the favorite, finished fourth in the 10-horse field.
ELMONT, N.Y. - Denon, narrowly defeated in the United Nations and Sword Dancer, broke through with a win in Sunday's $750,000 at Belmont Park before a crowd of 7,793.
Denon, with Edgar Prado aboard, found an opening in the stretch of the 1 1/2-mile Turf Classic and held off longshot Blazing Fury for a half-length win. It was another head back to Delta Form in third in the Grade 1 Turf Classic.
With Anticipation, the second choice in the eight-horse field, finished sixth.
SAN MATEO, Calif. - Only The Best ($5.60) sat off the sizzling pace of Gray Jag, caught him in the stretch and pulled away to an easy four-length victory in the $70,800 Malcolm Anderson Stakes at Bay Meadows on Sunday.
Gray Jag, who was fractious in the paddock, had a one-length lead after a 22.05 opening quarter. He opened a 2 1/2-length lead with a 43.96 half. Only The Best cut the lead to only a length in the stretch and clearly had the leader measured. He ran six furlongs in 1:09.01.
ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Fraulein, under a canny ride by Kevin Darley, held on gamely for a one-length score in the $837,750 at Woodbine Sunday.
Sent off as the 11-1 fifth choice in a field of six fillies and mares, Fraulein keyed a 1-2 sweep by English-based 3-year-old fillies in the Grade 1, 1 1/4-mile turf race.
Alasha, the 3-1 second-choice under John Murtagh, finished second, with even-money favorite Volga another length back in third.
SAN MATEO - Jockey Garrett Gomez wasn't sure where the finish line was, but he had I'm The Business' ($9.20) nose in front at just the right time as she edged pacesetting Crazy Ensign to win the $61,100 Hillsborough Handicap at Bay Meadows on Saturday. She covered 1 1/16 miles over the Longden Turf Course in 1:43.05.
"I thought I did (win), but it was hard for me," Gomez said. "I'm not used to riding here. I don't know where the wire is. I got about a neck in front at the 16th, but my mare hung and that other one fought back."
ELMONT, N.Y. - Evening Attire, who first burst on the scene with a 65-1 upset of Street Cry in last year's Discovery Handicap, pulled off another stunner Saturday, rallying from next to last to win the $1 million by 2 3/4 lengths at Belmont Park.
Lido Palace finished second, three-quarters of a length ahead of Harlan's Holiday, who nosed out Nothing Flat for third. Abreeze, Milwaukee Brew, 8-5 favorite Repent, and Puzzlement completed the order of finish.
ELMONT, N.Y. - Kazzia transferred her brilliant European form to North America on Saturday by taking the field gate to wire under Jorge Chavez to win Saturday's Grade 1, $750,000 by a neck at Belmont Park.
Fellow European shipper Turtle Bow rallied late, but fell a neck short at the wire as jockey Christophe Soumillon dropped his whip in mid-stretch. It was 1 1/4 lengths back to Mot Juste in third. Starine, Sunstone, even-money favorite England's Legend, and Tarfshi completed the order of finish.
