Tiller sees 'Forever' as ready

FORT ERIE, Ontario - Forever Grand, who was third in this year's Queen Plate, tops the festivities at Fort Erie on Tuesday as the track hosts four stakes that were formerly held at Woodbine.

The $60,000 events are restricted to runners who were offered for sale at one of Woodbine's open yearling sales or 2-year-olds-in-training sales.

The Harry J. Addison Jr. is for colts and geldings, 3 years old and up, and the Harry A. Hindmarsh is for fillies and mares, 3 and up. Both races will be run at 1 1/16 miles.

X Country tops on fast track

In five tries on turf, including two stakes races this season, X Country has been unable to do better than one third-place finish. He is also winless when he has been asked to race when the main track is wet.

Put him on a fast track, however, and the 4-year-old X Country is a model of consistency, collecting six wins and five seconds in 17 starts.

Tuesday's $75,000 Fall Handicap at Mountaineer Park will be run on dirt, and if the weather is good the seven rivals X Country faces in the 1 1/8-mile race could be in deep trouble.

Bonapaw cruises home

Horsephotos
Under a confident ride by Gerard Melancon, Bonapaw takes the Vosburgh Stakes. It would cost $200,000 to supplement him to the Breeders' Cup.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Bonapaw used his brilliant speed Saturday to win his first Grade 1 race and become a millionaire. But his connections are in no hurry to give some of that money back to make the 6-year-old gelding eligible for next month's Breeders' Cup Sprint.

Without ever feeling the leather of jockey Gerard Melancon's whip, Bonapaw led from the start and cruised to a 2 1/2-length victory in the $300,000 Vosburgh Stakes before 8,542 at Belmont Park. After running a half-mile in a relatively easy 45.10 seconds, Bonapaw covered the seven furlongs in 1:22.34 and returned $5.10.

Tates Creek comes from far back

ELMONT, N.Y. - Tates Creek took advantage of a swift pace and a turn back in distance to post a one-length win in Saturday's Grade 3, $114,400 Noble Damsel Handicap at Belmont Park.

Taken well back off a hot pace by Jerry Bailey, Tates Creek rallied four wide in the stretch and ran down Amonita inside the sixteenth pole to record her seventh victory from 11 career starts. Her final time of 1:32.79 for the mile established a stakes record for the Noble Damsel, which was run at 1 1/16 miles before 1997.

Florida's top 2yo filly is obvious

MIAMI, Fla. - Ivanavinalot left little doubt she is the premier 2-year-old filly on the grounds at Calder this summer by registering a convincing five-length victory over Dakota Light in Saturday's $100,000 Brave Raj Stakes.

Ivanavinalot, a daughter of West Acre who was bred by owner Gil Campbell, disputed the pace from the outset of the mile and 70-yard Brave Raj, shook free into the stretch, and then extended her advantage despite drifting steadily through the final furlong.

Meadowlands: Babae takes Violet

Trainer Frank Alexander chose to run Babae in Friday night's Grade 3 Violet Handicap at The Meadowlands rather than Saturday's Noble Damsel at Belmont Park, partly because of the $150,000 purse, but also because he knew jockey Jorge Chavez would accept the mount.

Alexander knew what he was doing.

Babae ($6.40), beaten in her last two starts in New York, wore down pacesetter Platinium Tiara and drew off to a three-length win.
