Great State Challenge puts statebreds on map

NEW YORK - Breeders' associations are making their lists and checking them twice as a novel racing day designed to promote state programs approaches.

The associations have been asked to identify the best horses bred in their states for the inaugural Great State Challenge, a program of six stakes races scheduled for Dec. 7 at Sam Houston Race Park. Each breeders' association is supposed to submit a list of 10 horses for each of the six races to the Breeders' Cup, the administrator of the event, by Oct. 4, to get the selection process rolling.

Magna fails in Remington bid

DALLAS - The future of Remington Park in Oklahoma City was uncertain Thursday after the Oklahoma Racing Commission decided to deny the track's request to drop Quarter Horse racing next year and shorten its Thoroughbred meet.

Before the commission hearing on Thursday, an official from Magna Entertainment, which owns Remington, told commissioners that adopting the original calendar could force the track to close. Last month, track officials said the projected loss on the Quarter Horse meet is $2 million.

No excuse for Candid Glen

As a closer, Candid Glen needs honest fractions up front to fuel his late run, which is something he should get Sunday when he takes on Maysville Slew and the entry of Bien Nicole and Rasby in the $150,000 DeBartolo Memorial Breeders' Cup at Remington Park in Oklahoma City.

The DeBartolo, the richest turf race of the meet, drew 12. It has been shortened in distance from 1 3/8 miles last year to 1 1/8 miles. The shorter distance benefits Candid Glen, whose last two wins have come at 1 1/8 miles.

Super Fuse impresses even his trainer

MIAMI - Super Fuse, who put his name in some select company when he earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 99 in his career debut at Calder this summer, turned in another sharp performance defeating entry-level allowance company on Thursday.

In his first start since he stumbled at the break and was a tiring fifth in Delaware's NATC Futurity Aug. 31, Super Fuse kept his local mark unblemished with a two-length victory over five rivals on Thursday. The victory pleased, and may have even somewhat surprised, trainer Richard Ciardullo.

Capsized's speed the determining factor

CHICAGO - Last autumn Capsized had sore feet and Mystery Giver wouldn't eat. A year later Capsized has comfy shoes and Mystery Giver is diving into his food. Both are good-feeling horses now, but what Capsized has and Mystery Giver does not is speed, a potentially deciding edge when the pair squares off in the Sea O' Erin Breeders' Cup Mile.

A solid field of nine was entered in the Sea O' Erin, a $150,000-added turf race that tops the Washington Park undercard. Also of interest Sunday is a ninth race allowance that will match Unshaded, Chindi, and Meadowminer at seven furlongs.

Roxelana proves better racehorse than broodmare

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - If fate had not intervened, Roxelana never would have been on the racetrack Wednesday night at Turfway Park.

O'Neill will have to do it without F J's Pace

POMONA, Calif. - Doug O'Neill is closing in on the first meet title of his training career, holding a 9-6 lead over A.C. Avila going into Friday. If he leads the Fairplex meet, O'Neill will do it without the highweight for Sunday's $50,000 Governor's Cup at 6 1/2 furlongs. Despite a facile win in the six-furlong Aprisa Handicap Sept. 18, F J's Pace won't run back in the Governor's Cup.

"He's doing super, but it's a little quick back and I don't want to get greedy," O'Neill said, adding that F J's Pace would run at the Oak Tree meet at Santa Anita.

Anderson Stakes an early test

SAN MATEO, Calif. - There is a learning curve for both 2-year-olds and their trainers. The horses must learn how to race, and horsemen need to be able to gauge their horses' ability and determine at what level to race them.

For trainers Brian Koriner and Greg Gilchrist, Sunday's $60,000-added Malcolm Anderson Stakes at Bay Meadows will provide some answers.

Koriner is entering Hawaiian Lyon and Tactical Strike in the six-furlong race for 2-year-olds. Gilchrist is entering Gray Jag in the race that attracted five entrants.

Fast pace will set up Sir Pucker

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Sir Pucker goes for back-to-back stakes wins as he faces seven other older horses in Sunday's $60,000 Gold Breeders' Cup Stakes.

The $30,000 Osiris Stakes, for 2-year-olds at one mile, is also featured on the closing-day card.

One of two entrants in the 1 1/8-mile Gold Breeders' Cup trained by Harry Kube, Sir Pucker has won 4 of his 6 races here this year. In his last start, the R.J. Speers Stakes, Sir Pucker stalked a five-horse pace battle before making his move on the final turn and drawing off by 5 3/4 lengths.
