This field shouldn't mind mud

ALBANY, Calif. - Chilean-bred Se Me Acabo will meet some of northern California's most consistent mares Sunday in the $60,000-added Camilla Urso Handicap.

The six-furlong race attracted a field of seven, including stakes winners Bullish Miss, De Goddaughter, Fertile, and Posadas.

Sharp sprinters try two turns

ANDERSON, Ind. - Indiana-breds who are sired by registered Indiana stallions are the focus in Sunday night's pair of $40,000-added stakes. Both the Richmond Stakes for fillies and mares and the Gus Grissom for colts and geldings are carded at 1 1/16 miles.

Maggie's Dream is unbeaten in three starts this year but must stretch out in distance in the Richmond Stakes and face Amanda's Crown, a sharp sprinter who also is unproven around two turns.

Krone wins at Hollywood Park

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Julie Krone rode the first winner of her week-old comeback on Thursday at Hollywood Park. The victory could not have come on an easier mount.

Krone rode Jade Vixen to a comfortable six-length win against maiden claimers, scoring on a heavy favorite.

"I got a little teary-eyed when I pulled up," she said.

The win came six days into her comeback following an absence of 3 1/2 years from competitive racing. Jade Vixen was her eighth mount in the last week, and first aboard a favorite.

Victory Ride, shown winning the $100,000 Madison at Keeneland in April, will go after her sixth win in nine lifetime starts in Saturday's Churchill Downs Distaff - but the opposition runs deep.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The theory that the sport of horse racing tapers off badly after the Breeders' Cup could take a major hit Saturday when a deep and competitive field of fillies and mares clashes in the 17th running of the Grade 2 Churchill Downs Distaff.

Inda's faith is rewarded

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Horse owner Aaron Jones was never more delighted to be wrong as he was following Wednesday's $73,450 Bien Bien Stakes at Hollywood Park.

Jones was reluctant to run Music's Storm in the one-mile turf stakes for 3-year-olds, but consented to the plan at the insistence of trainer Eduardo Inda.

"I thought we were a little over our heads today," Jones said. "The trainer didn't think so and he was right." Music's Storm [$50.80] rallied wide through the stretch and outfinished Golden Arrow to win his first stakes in the Bien Bien.

Only track can beat 'Buckeye'

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - There's never a guarantee that a horse is going to win a particular race, but if Buckeye Bates runs the way he normally does, they won't beat him in Saturday's seventh race at Hastings Park, a $15,000 optional sprint for older horses.
