Badgett said this was agreed upon by The Stronach Group at the urging of The Jockeys’ Guild. However, Terry Meyocks, president and CEO of the Guild, said the original agreed-upon day to be in Florida was Tuesday.

Cistron (left) showed his versatility winning the Grade 3 San Simeon on turf off a long layoff.

Cistron is likely to race on dirt in coming months, even though he recorded a sharp win in his first start since July in Saturday’s Grade 3 San Simeon Stakes for turf sprinters at Santa Anita.

Cistron’s presence in the $101,000 San Simeon Stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs was a matter of convenience. The race appeared on the calendar at a time that fit the 6-year-old horse.

“We don’t think the grass is his best surface, or that was his best distance,” trainer John Sadler said Sunday. “I think he won because he was the best horse in the race. We accomplished what we wanted to.”

Connections eyeing Charles Whittingham Stakes for Ward 'n Jerry

Benoit Photo
Ward 'n Jerry, now 7, won his first stakes in Saturday's Grade 3 San Luis Rey.

By late summer of 2018, Ward ‘n Jerry’s career seemed headed in the wrong direction. Winless in four starts in the preceding 18 months, Ward ‘n Jerry was shipped to Idaho and a respite on the farm of owners Larry and Marianne Williams.

“He’d fallen on hard times,” trainer Mike Puype recalled on Sunday.

Ward ‘n Jerry was 5 at the time and had won four races. He was gelded during the vacation and did not return to racing until last summer.
