Saturday, Big Broken Straw will be Iwinski's first starter - and perhaps his first winner - in Texas when he runs in the $100,000 Star of Texas Stakes, one of nine stakes on the Texas Champions Day card at Sam Houston.

Mrs. Revere forces Mott's hand

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Unless it's something like the Kentucky Derby or Breeders' Cup, it just doesn't make much sense for a trainer to run three of his horses against each other in the same race.

But Bill Mott and his longtime assistant Ralph Nicks have made an exception for Saturday. They will be represented with three fillies in the Mrs. Revere Stakes at Churchill Downs, accounting for one quarter of the 12-horse field.

Jill's Layup takes shot at Amelia Peabody

EAST BOSTON, Mass. - Trainer Edward Stone names most of his horses after shots his granddaughter, Jill Custodio, makes playing basketball. With Jill's Layup a standout in Saturday's $30,000 Amelia Peabody Stakes, the filly couldn't be more aptly named.

There are only six entered in the six-furlong race for 2-year-old Massachusetts-bred fillies. Considering the other five are maidens, including two first-timers and two others who lost their last race by more than 30 lengths, Jill's Layup is looking at a slam-dunk.

It's Castlebrook vs. Coolbythepool XVIII

MIAMI - Their confrontations over the years may not have had the same national impact as Alydar and Affirmed's but, locally, it's hard to remember another rivalry as keen or evenly matched as the one between Castlebrook and Coolbythepool, which continues in Saturday's $200,000 Elmer Heubeck Distaff Handicap.

Duddly Doo Run back with own kind in Paradise Valley

PHOENIX, Ariz. - You wouldn't know it from his eighth-place finish in the Nov. 2 Walter Cluer Handicap, but Duddly Doo Run is quite capable on turf. The 3-year-old Duddly Doo Run gets a chance for redemption as he carries high weight of 123 pounds in Saturday's $30,000 Paradise Valley Handicap at Turf Paradise. The 7 1/2-furlong turf race has lured a field of 12 3-year-olds.

Arsen may be hot holiday commodity

ALBANY, Calif. - Arsen, who made his debut last Nov. 24 and compiled a record of two wins and two thirds in five starts, has returned to trainer Len Shoemaker's barn. He was given time off after finishing fourth in the El Camino Real Derby on March 9.

"He's gotten bigger, stronger, taller," Shoemaker said. "Because of the rains, we had some pretty hard [sealed] tracks last year, and I think it took its toll on him."

The decision to stop on the colt was easy.

"A young horse can sour if you go on with them," Shoemaker said.

Statebreds get their shot at jackpots

With a $500,000 2-year-old stakes next month and slot machine revenue flooding into overnight purses, Delta Downs no longer is a sleepy western Louisiana outpost trotting out low-level claimers who can't win anywhere else.
