Miss Crissy putting it all together

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Two veteran trainers took turns in the stakes spotlight here last weekend: Emile Allain sent out Miss Crissy to capture Sunday's Fanfreluche and Gil Rowntree was victorious in Saturday's Bunty Lawless with Steady Ruckus.

Allain, who celebrated his 72nd birthday this past summer, trains Miss Crissy for the Harlequin Ranches of Dick Bonnycastle.

Rowntree, 68 years old, and a member of the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame since 1997, trains Steady Ruckus for owner Ed Lang.

Puxa Saco wins Anoakia Stakes

ARCADIA, Calif. - Florida shippers Puxa Saco and Forest Native finished one-two in the $81,600 Anoakia Stakes on Sunday at Santa Anita, thereby validating the form of Florida-based Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies candidate Ivanavinalot.

Puxa Saco ($5.40) was the only winning favorite in the pick six, which went uncashed for the second straight day. A massive two-day carryover of $520,536.71 is up for grabs Wednesday.

Prized Amberpro takes Victoria Stakes

Bossier City, La. - It was the ladies turn on Sunday as the Louisiana Breeders' Festival continued at Louisiana Downs.

The Victoria Stakes, for Louisiana-bred filly and mare sprinters, got the action underway and Linda Patch and Joseph Thomas' Prized Amberpro returned to her winning ways with a strong rally down the stretch. Mike's Sister, who forced or set the pace throughout, held on for second followed by favored Taylor's Queen.

Miss Crissy best in Fanfreluche

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Favored Miss Crissy rallied up the rail under Steven Bahen to take the $163,500 Fanfreluche Stakes by a half-length over Buffalo Jump at Woodbine Sunday.

Steven Bahen steadied Miss Crissy in behind the leaders early in the six-furlong dash for 2-year-old fillies, and put her into a stalking position on the turn. La Petite Justice hooked up with Ella Bella and Buffalo Jump on the front end through splits of :22.10 and :45..03 seconds, before the latter emerged with the lead.

Bullish Miss gets first stakes win

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Bullish Miss ($5.20), entered in the $60,850 Charles H. Russell Handicap at Bay Meadows after it was postponed one week due to a lack of entries, scored her first stakes victory, outlasting Onslaught by a neck in the six-furlong race.

The 4-year-old filly led Onslaught by a head after a 22.41 opening quarter then picked up the pace with a 22.33 second quarter to take a one-length lead. She won the race in 1:09.10.

Flat Top wins BC Steeplechase

Flat Top, who had finished third in all three of his starts this season after returning from a two-year layoff, led all of the way to win Saturday's $250,000 Breeders' Cup Steeplechase by three lengths at the Far Hills races in New Jersey.

Halo Tyra wins Palo Alto

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Halo Tyra ($7.60) sat behind pacesetter A B Noodle and pulled away in the lane to win the $60,650 Palo Alto Handicap at Bay Meadows.

A B Noodle didn't break sharply but quickly assumed command on the rail, running the opening quarter in 22.08 seconds in the one-mile race for 3-year-old fillies. She settled nicely after getting the lead but couldn't withstand Halo Tyra's closing kick. Halo Tyra earned her second stakes victory by one length in 1:35.13.

Oak Hall takes Shishkabob

Bossier City, La. - Ena Ortego's Oak Hall reinforced his position as the top older Louisiana-bred on Saturday by winning the $67,600 Shiskabob Stakes by four lengths to kick off this year's Louisiana Breeders' Festival.

Pacesetter White Star held on to finish second followed by One Brick Shy.

Oak Hall ($3.40) won for the fourth time this season in six starts and for the eighth time in the last two seasons with most of his starts coming in his home start. The 6-year-old, trained by Keith Bourgeois and ridden by Kerwin Clark, has now won over $500,000 in his 36-race career.

Band Is Passing wins

Band Is Passing returned from a six-week layoff to post a 4 1/4-length win in the $100,000 Flying Pidgeon Handicap at Calder Race Course on Saturday. Link to Jimmy finished second and Marquette was third.

A 6-year-old son of Doc's Leader, Band Is Passing completed the 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.50 over firm turf, and returned $3 to win.

Owned and trained by Stanley Ersoff, Band Is Passing has now won 13 of 29 career starts. He has shown a preference for Calder's turf course, having now won over it nine times in his career.

Steady Ruckus again

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Favored Steady Ruckus overcame traffic problems in the stretch to take the $140,125 Bunty Lawless Stakes for the second time in the last three years at Woodbine on Saturday.

Steady Ruckus, who was ridden by Jim McAleney, raced well off a four-way pace battle in the one-mile turf event, and commenced his rally on the turn. Hanlan emerged with the lead early in the stretch, but was overhauled by several runners in the final furlong, including Steady Ruckus, who found room along the inside and bested 25-1 shot Devil Valentine to prevail by a neck.
