Keeneland refunds BC pick 6

A totalisator malfunction Saturday at Keeneland Race Course resulted in the refunding of about $76,000 in pick six wagers on the Breeders' Cup. Announcement of the refunds came Saturday evening after the entire Breeders' Cup card was run. No tickets were sold at Keeneland with five or six winners.

Keeneland officials said they regretted the development since bettors may have discarded what they believed to be losing pick six tickets. The amount that is not cashed by the opening of the spring meet in April will be used in a pick six carryover pool.

Washington trainer has near-misses but no hits

SAN MATEO, Calif. - It may be too bad that trainer Bonnie Jenne isn't involved in horseshoes instead of horse racing.

Close, as the old saying goes, counts in horseshoes.

Close actually pays off in horse racing, too, and Jenne, a Washington-based trainer, has done pretty well since arriving in northern California this fall.

She sends out 6-year-old gelding Itsasgoodasitgets in a $25,000 claimer Wednesday at Bay Meadows. He ran third in his northern California debut in an Oct. 11 allowance race.

Defeated troops back home unhurt

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - No one really expected miracles from Woodbine's four-horse contingent on last Saturday's Breeders' Cup program at Arlington.

So while local boosters had to be disappointed after watching Wake at Noon, Chopinina, and Wando end next to last and Perfect Soul finish absolutely last, it should be noted that all four were the longest shots on the board in their respective races.

The good news is that all emerged relatively unscathed and were back in their stalls at Woodbine on Monday morning.

Allspice rallies to take Eliza Stakes

CHICAGO - Allspice won the $100,000 Eliza Stakes for 2-year-old fillies Sunday as Arlington's meet closed after almost five months on a fitting note.

Two races after Allspice validated a blowout maiden win, Devil's Bandit won the meet's final heat for owner Frank Calabrese, trainer Wayne Catalano and jockey Rene Douglas. These three have dominated day-to-day racing here. Calabrese, who finished with 66 wins, and Catalano, with 64, both set records for wins at an Arlington meet.
