LOUISVILLE, Ky. - John McKee broke Steve Cauthen's track record for most victories by an apprentice when he rode four winners on the closing-day program Saturday at Churchill Downs.

McKee, 21, won with Broad Breadth ($6.40) in the third race, Bluegrass Spirit ($25.20) in the fifth, Dancer Cielo ($10.60) in the 10th, and Elusive Gentleman ($22.60) in the 12th. He finished the meet with 27 winners, surpassing the total of 24 that Cauthen, an eventual Hall of Fame jockey, compiled as an apprentice at the 1976 fall meet.

ANDERSON, Ind. - Miss Dakota rallied from just off the pace to post a 9 1/4-length victory in the $32,700 Terre Haute Stakes for 2-year-old Indiana-bred fillies at Hoosier Park on Friday night.

Trained by Mike Lauer and ridden by Terry Thompson , Miss Dakota improved her career mark to 3-3-1 from 7 starts for owners Steve Fugitte and Bob Nettles. Sent off as the 6-5 favorite in the field of seven, Miss Dakota was timed in 1:42.21 for the mile over a fast track.

Pleasant Point checked in second with Indy Fire a distant third, another 4 1/2 lengths back.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Texas Glitter won the $200,000 Hollywood Turf Express on Friday at Hollywood Park, avenging a third-place finish in 2001 and a fourth last year.

Ridden by John Velazquez, Texas Glitter finished 5 1/2 furlongs on turf in a quick 1:01.52.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - There is much more at stake than the first-place prize of $300,000 in Sunday's $500,000 Matriarch Stakes at Hollywood Park.

For Golden Apples, a victory in the Grade 1 race would be her third major stakes win of 2002 and would clinch the Eclipse Award as the nation's outstanding turf female.

For Banks Hill, a win would give her a very slim chance at that title, coming on the heels of her game second in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Arlington Park on Oct. 26.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - In what will likely be her final career start, Critical Eye will try to put the icing on a fine career in Sunday's $75,000-added Montauk Handicap at Aqueduct.

Critical Eye, who will be bred to Deputy Minister early next year, would need to finish third or better in the restricted Montauk to become a millionaire earner. She enters the race with $991,591 in career earnings.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Unlimited Value, the winner of the California Cup Sprint last month at Santa Anita, has injured a pastern, and the injury could force the end of his racing career, according to owner John Harris.

The injury occurred on Friday during training at Santa Anita. Harris said that the pastern was fractured, but not displaced, and that Unlimited Value was scheduled to undergo surgery over the weekend. Dr. Rick Arthur will conduct the surgery, Harris said.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - There are plenty of live chances among the nine starters in Saturday's $500,000 Hollywood Derby.

Unlike in most stakes, when some starters can be eliminated at a glance, the derby features several 3-year-olds coming off victories and others with losses but legitimate excuses.

If this is December, then it must be Turfway.

A turn of the calendar page happens to coincide this year with a shift in locales on the Kentucky racing circuit - and, indeed, the only live racing in the state during the next four months will be conducted at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky.

Rhodesian Storm proved he was more than a just turf specialist when he captured the 1 1/2-mile allowance prep for the Valedictory by three-quarters of a length over A Fleets Dancer, winner of the 2000 Valedictory.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Vernon Invader, winner of the BC Cup Classic, returns to Hastings Park on Sunday after winning two stakes in New Mexico. He should be a solid favorite over eight other older horses in the closing-day feature, the 1 1/8-mile, $28,000 Au Revoir Handicap, which goes as the seventh race.
