Oaklawn Stakes might end up showdown between Asmussen and Cox

Hopeful winner Basin is among three Stave Asmussen trainees possible for the Oaklawn Stakes.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Trainers Steve Asmussen and Brad Cox could have multiple starters in the $200,000 Oaklawn Stakes on Saturday.

Asmussen said Monday that Basin, Gold Street, and Shoplifted are all on deck for the 1 1/8-mile race for 3-year-olds at Oaklawn Park, while Cox said he had two possible runners in Shared Sense and Something Natural.

Kentucky Derby Future Wager: Mutuel field favored at 3-1 in Pool 4

Pool 4 handle was the second lowest for a single pool since the Kentucky Derby Future Wager was first held in 1999.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The mutuel field, the 24th or “all others” option, once again was favored when Pool 4 of the 2020 Kentucky Derby Future Wager closed Sunday following the customary three-day betting window.

The field closed at 3-1 and was followed by Charlatan (5-1), Tiz the Law (5-1), Maxfield (9-1), Nadal (9-1), Authentic (10-1), and Honor A. P. (15-1). The lowest $2 exacta will-pay was Tiz the Law over the field (22-24), worth $62.

Honor A. P., Nadal, and Charlatan work at Santa Anita

Nadal earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 96 for his victory in the Grade 2 Rebel.

Charlatan, Honor A. P., and Nadal, three of the nation’s leading 3-year-olds, were given workouts at Santa Anita on Sunday.

With the coronavirus outbreak temporarily disrupting racing at Santa Anita, and at many other venues nationwide, it is unclear where the trio will appear next, although the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park on May 2 is a possibility.

Storm the Court among classy group of Saturday workers

Storm the Court is a strong possibility for the San Felipe Stakes.

From a champion to Grade 1 winners to a graded stakes winner who had an eventful trip to the other side of the world last month, there were several notable workouts at Santa Anita on Saturday.

The track is not operating after it was ordered closed by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health on March 27 because of the coronavirus outbreak. While track officials are hoping for a quick resolution with government officials, there is no timetable for a resumption of racing.

Ever Dangerous kicked off his career in style Thursday at Gulfstream Park, winning a 1 1/16-mile turf race by four lengths at odds of 14-1 for trainer George Weaver and owners Randy Hill and Dean and Patti Reeves.

Ever Dangerous is a son of Kitten’s Joy out of a Rahy mare, The Rahy Angel. His third dam produced Grade 1 stakes winners Dimitrova and Mutafaweq.

Davis's road trip to Florida paying dividends

Last month, Dylan Davis grabbed his tack and his family and drove from New York to Gulfstream Park, where he is riding for the spring.

Jockeys have to make split-second decisions all the time. Dylan Davis made one last month that has him continuing to ride while many of his New York brethren are stuck at home.

For the last two weeks, Davis, a regular on the New York Racing Association circuit, has been riding at Gulfstream Park. On Thursday, he picked up his first victory there when he guided the 3-year-old filly Envoutante to an impressive 6 1/2-length maiden victory.

Prat making sure he'll be ready to ride when racing resumes

Flavien Prat has been taking it easy while Santa Anita has been closed, but will start working out again next week.

A mandatory vacation was not what jockey Flavien Prat envisioned for early April. Similar to thousands of his racing colleagues worldwide, Prat’s season has been idled by the coronavirus outbreak.

Santa Anita, where Prat is leading rider at the winter-spring meeting, was ordered shut by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health on March 27 after the racetrack was deemed a nonessential business during the outbreak.

Santana resumes riding on Sunday

Jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. is scheduled to resume riding Sunday at Oaklawn Park, according to Arkansas state steward Bernie Hettel.

Santana has been in an Oaklawn-directed quarantine after riding at Fair Grounds in New Orleans on Louisiana Derby Day. He was named on horses at Oaklawn on Thursday and Friday, but the quarantine was extended from 11 days to 14 to align with state standards, according to an official with Oaklawn.
