Post won't be Starlet problem

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - When Tizalovelylady drew the outside in a field of 13 for the California Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita on Nov. 2., her chances of winning the race were essentially gone.

Making her stakes debut in the Cal Cup, Tizalovelylady understandably ran wide throughout and overcame traffic in the stretch to finish a respectable third.

Trainer Jay Robbins and owner Joan Rogers will not have to worry about a wide draw when Tizalovelylady reappears in Saturday's $200,000 Hollywood Starlet Stakes.

One star is rising as another fades

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - A young filly with a promising future and an older gelding whose best races may be behind him start in two allowance races at Hollywood Park on Friday.

Secret Garden, a stakes winner in Europe in October, makes her first start on turf in this country in the seventh race. She finished second over a wet-fast track in the Matiara Stakes here on Nov. 9 in her U.S. debut.

Lady Stars shadowed by label

MIAMI - Lady Stars has won 4 of 5 starts, with her only loss coming at the hands of Puxa Saco, who has won two stakes since shipping to the West Coast earlier this fall. But despite her imposing credentials, Lady Stars will likely be among the outsiders when she makes her stakes debut in Saturday's $100,000 Three Ring Stakes for 2-year-old fillies.

NYRA revamps Triple Tiara - complete with $2M bonus

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - The New York Racing Association announced on Wednesday that it is revamping its Triple Tiara series - New York's triple crown for fillies - and will offer a $2 million bonus to any 3-year-old filly who can sweep the Mother Goose Stakes, the Coaching Club American Oaks, and the Alabama Stakes, all Grade 1 races. In effect, the Alabama replaces the one-mile Acorn Stakes in the series.

The Acorn will still be run as scheduled, on June 6, as part of a promotion linked to the next day's Belmont Stakes.

Frankel attacks money record

Over the next three weekends, trainer Bobby Frankel will have runners in as many as five stakes in an attempt to set a single-season earnings record.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Trainer Bobby Frankel's quest to set a single-season earnings record will not include a start by Surya in Sunday's $150,000 Bayakoa Handicap at Hollywood Park.

Through Tuesday, Frankel's runners had earned $17,433,888, leaving him only $408,470 shy of the record of $17,842,358 set by D. Wayne Lukas in 1988.

Over the next three weekends, Frankel will have runners in as many as five stakes in an attempt to break the record. But that list of stakes does not include the Bayakoa Handicap for fillies and mares over 1 1/16 miles on dirt.

Dutrow always dangerous here

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - There's something about Aqueduct that brings out the best in Maryland-based trainer Anthony Dutrow.

Last winter, Dutrow batted .500 over the inner track (9 for 18) and won a couple of stakes. This fall, Dutrow batted 1.000 over the main track (5 for 5). Thursday, he hopes to keep his Big A fortunes rolling with a pair of runners in Ebb n' Flow in the fifth and Nice Boots Baby in the featured eighth, a third-level allowance race for fillies and mares going six furlongs.

Rice returns to racetrack

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Trainer Linda Rice was back at work Tuesday morning, just one week after suffering three broken ribs and a broken elbow when a horse kicked her in the back at her barn.

Rice, with her left arm in a sling, seemed upbeat about her progress, saying she was fortunate her injuries weren't worse. Rice said she would come out for only a couple of hours each day for the next few weeks.

"The ribs are healing miraculously fast," Rice said while preparing to time horses at the Belmont Park training track. "Maybe because I'm a runner I'm healing really fast."

Surface switch did the trick

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - A change in surface has given Fantastic Groom a new career this year.

At this time last year, Fantastic Groom was uncompetitive in starter allowance races on dirt. With a switch to turf, he has King Max Farms and trainer Pico Perdomo wondering if he could develop into a stakes-caliber horse.

To move closer to that level, Fantastic Groom must win races such as Thursday's seventh at Hollywood Park, a $45,000 allowance over 1 1/16 miles on turf.

Turf the key for Larry B

Larry B was one unhappy colt late on the afternoon of Nov. 3. Where was that lovely green cushion beneath his feet? What was the stinging substance the other horses at Churchill Downs were kicking back in his face?

A true turf horse racing on dirt isn't a pretty sight to behold, and Larry B - expressing his displeasure early in the proceedings by unseating jockey Rene Douglas during warm-ups - ran ugly in the Grade 3 Iroquois Stakes, barely completing the course. It was Larry B's first start on the main track, and it was nothing like the two grass races he had already run.
