Martha's Music pays $22 at Laurel

Martha's Music finished strongly from well out in the track to win Saturday's Grade 3 Anne Arundel Stakes at Laurel Race Course by three-quarters of a length.

Bayakoa soft spot for Starrer

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Five starts against the top fillies in the nation have prepared Starrer for a defense of her crown in the Grade 2, $150,000 at Hollywood Park on Sunday.

This year Starrer has chased Azeri in the Breeders' Cup Distaff, Vanity Handicap, and Lady's Secret Handicap on the West Coast. In two trips to the East, she finished behind Summer Colony in the Delaware Handicap and Personal Ensign Handicap.

There is no such threat in the Bayakoa, where Starrer figures to be favored.

Allamerican Bertie chomping at bit

MIAMI - Allamerican Bertie began her 3-year-old campaign in south Florida and may end it the same way with an appearance in Saturday's $100,000 Frances A. Genter Stakes on the turf.

Trainer Steve Flint said he was 50-50 about whether he would run Allamerican Bertie in the Genter or await the opening of Gulfstream Park and the $100,000 Honey Fox Handicap on Jan. 5.

"She's been lightly raced and definitely looking to do something," said Flint, who trains Allamerican Bertie for owners Elaine, Bert, and Richard Klein.

Rahy's Secret right at home

Most handicappers wholeheartedly believe in the "horse for course" theory, which holds that some horses elevate their performances over tracks that suit their styles and preferences. But does the opposite hold true - that some horses loathe a particular surface and underachieve on it?

That question gets put to a test Sunday, when multiple stakes winner Rebridled races in the featured ninth race on grass at Fair Grounds, a course on which he has struggled throughout his career.

X factor in Runyon: Distance

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Figure out who can get the distance, and that should go a long way toward predicting the outcome of the Damon Runyon Stakes on Aqueduct's inner track.

Sunday's $75,000-added Damon Runyon drew a field of nine New York-bred juveniles, with the Gary Contessa-trained uncoupled duo of Unswept and Grey Comet expected to vie for favoritism in the 1 1/16-mile race.
