Golden Gate jockey sore but okay

ALBANY, Calif. - Jockey Macario Rodriguez was slightly injured Sunday when Palermitano broke down 20 yards from the finish line in the second race at Golden Gate Fields.

Rodriguez, who has 11 victories at the meeting, had bruised knees and a sore right wrist after sliding into one of the posts holding up the inner rail. X-rays revealed no broken bones.

Palermitano, a 3-year-old gelding who was running second when he fell, fractured his left front leg and had to be euthanized.

Bidis adds a bit of class to Cheer

Some of the better Kentucky horses have gone south for the winter to Florida, others to Louisiana. But a few of those who will head to Oaklawn Park in Arkansas continue to stick around Kentucky.

That makes a race like Wednesday's $50,000 Holiday Cheer at Turfway Park stronger than it would be if it were contested in February. The Holiday Cheer has attracted Bidis, an Oaklawn stakes-quality sprinter.

Hollendorfer sends out a foursome

ALBANY, Calif. - Wednesday's $75,000 Lafayette Handicap at Golden Gate Fields is an interesting and competitive race that should start the New Year on a promising note.

The nine-horse field contains a pair of entries: a two-horse coupling of Epic Honor and San Nicolas and a four-horse entry of last year's Lafayette winner I'madrifter, Chinkapin, Surprized, and Halo Cat. Because of the entries, there will be only five betting interests.

Now maybe Grammarian will get some respect

Grammarian turns for home on the lead at Santa Anita Sunday on his way to a one-length victory in the $150,000 San Gabriel Handicap.

ARCADIA, Calif. - No matter how consistently he performs, Grammarian cannot attract substantial support from California bettors.

Last July, he was 29-1 when he won the Sunset Handicap. On Sunday, he was 9-1 in the and rewarded his backers with a frontrunning win in the turf race over 1 1/8 miles.

"We get no respect and that's fine," said winning owner Lindsey Williams, with a smile.

Grammarian ($21.40) took the lead from Night Patrol when the field reached the backstretch and maintained a one-length advantage through fractions of :47.50 and 1:11.53.

Call Me Lefty takes Texas Stallion Stakes

Call Me Lefty is all alone at the wire, a three-length winner of the $125,000 colts and geldings division of the Texas Stallion Stakes on Saturday night at Sam Houston Race Park.

Call Me Lefty remained unbeaten around two turns when he led throughout for a three-length win over Lasttorun in the of the Texas Stallion Stakes on Saturday night at Sam Houston Race Park.

It was another four lengths back in third to Hasit.

Call Me Lefty($3.60) broke sharp in the one-mile race for 2-year-olds, and went on to cover the distance over a fast track in 1:38.87. One race prior, the colt was a 10-length winner of a two-turn allowance at Sam Houston.

Hadif's Allstar romps in Genesis

Hadif's Allstar improved her record to 3-for-6 when she rolled to a four-length win over Ritzy Dame in the $40,000 Genesis for 2-year-old fillies Saturday night at Delta Downs in Vinton, La. It was another neck back in third to Fantasy On Fire.

Hadif's Allstar($5.40) stalked pacesetter Pawsie's Princess through an opening quarter in 22.34 seconds, before overtaking that one and going on to cover the five furlongs over a fast track in 59.52 seconds. Alex Jimenez was aboard the winner for trainer Sam David, Jr.

Santa Anita carryover reaches $160,167

ARCADIA, Calif. - An upset win by 17-1 Got Koko in the $200,000 La Brea Stakes helped to create a pick six carryover of $160,167 for Sunday's nine-race program.

Sunday's pick six covers the fourth through ninth races, which includes three sprints on the main track, two routes on dirt and one turf race. There is a chance of rain, which could lead to a change in suface for the turf race.
