Pass Rush takes San Fernando

Benoit Photo
Florida shipper, Pass Rush, wins his first graded stakes in Saturday's $219,600 San Fernando Breeders' Cup Stakes at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Pass Rush was the lone invader among the eight 4-year-olds in Saturday's $219,600 at Santa Anita.

His convincing win did not flatter the seven California-based colts and geldings that finished behind him, none of whom managed to put up a battle through the stretch.

Shipping from Florida, Pass Rush won his first graded stakes in the San Fernando, racing wide throughout and pulling clear in the final furlong to score by 3 1/2 lengths. Ridden by Corey Nakatani, Pass Rush ($9.20) ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.37.

Windsor Castle gets a well-judged ride under Eibar Coa to win Saturday's Hal's Hope at Gulfstream. Favorite Hero's Tribute finished fourth.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Windsor Castle got the hot pace he needed and made the most of it, rallying from near the back of the pack to a 1 1/2-length victory in Saturday's $100,000 at Gulfstream Park.

Windsor Castle, a 5-year-old son of Lord Carson, benefited from a well-judged ride by Eibar Coa, the meet-leading rider. Coa rated Windsor Castle near the rear of the eight-horse field for the opening six furlongs of the 1 1/16-mile race, moved into contention while swinging widest into the stretch, and easily outfinished Saint Verre and Najran.

Premediation ran the two-turn mile in 1:35.80, fastest of the meet, while toting co-highweight of 122 pounds.

It matters, for whom Bell toils

OLDSMAR Fla. - When Derek Bell rallied Nick's Noactor down the middle of the course to take Friday's feature at Tampa Bay Downs, it gave the rider at least one winner on six of the last seven racing days. While not a dazzling statistic, it is one that will surely catch the attention of trainers, and could result in Bell getting a wider choice of mounts.

Laurel: P Day gets winning ride

Ryan Folgelsonger, an Eclipse Award nominee for top apprentice jockey, gave one of the best rides of his young career on P Day, waiting for room in upper stretch and then accelerating at just the right moment to win the $75,000 Native Dancer.

P Day and Full Brush were fourth and fifth and behind horses at the top of the stretch when both shot toward an opening between front-runners Paynes Bay and Hay Getoutofmyway. Both P Day and Full Brush got through, and they battled nostril to nostril to the wire. P Day inched in front a few yards from the finish to win by a head.

NYRA/Adam Coglianese
Zonk wins Saturday's Grade 3 Affectionately at Aqueduct. She won the race last year, too, but then was sidelined for seven months.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - After breaking slowly and going wide into the first turn, Zonk overpowered her six rivals to win the Grade 3, $109,600 Affectionately Handicap by four lengths before 7,471 at chilly Aqueduct.

Wishful Splendor rallied from last to get second by a neck over Kiss a Miss. Shop Till You Drop, Pocus Hocus, Persky, and With Ability completed the order of finish.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Tates Creek earned a winter vacation after extending her stakes winning streak to three in Saturday's $150,000, Grade 2 at Santa Anita.

Improving Spectacular Dove solid favorite

NEW ORLEANS - In June, Spectacular Dove couldn't win a conditioned claiming race at Colonial Downs, but Monday at Fair Grounds she will start as a solid favorite in a third-level turf allowance with a $75,000 claiming option. The turnaround coincided with Spectacular Dove's move to trainer Tom Amoss's barn, and she enters Monday's race on a three-race win streak.

Prince Alphie's late charge does it

Louis Hodges Jr.
Prince Alphie crosses the wire in front by 1 1/4 lengths in the Black Gold.

NEW ORLEANS - Prince Alphie has spent most of his short racing career in Canada, but on Saturday in the Black Gold Handicap at Fair Grounds he did his best impression of a European racehorse. The Black Gold developed just like most turf races in Europe, slow early and fast late, and Prince Alphie had the best finish of all.

Third at the stretch call, Prince Alphie kicked into high gear a half-furlong from home under Shane Sellers and outsprinted Canaan Land and Oak Hill for a 1 1/4-length win.

Bruanna's the first lady here

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - At virtually any other time in his 17-year training career, Mike Gorham would have found it easy to label Bruanna as his "big mare." After all, Bruanna has won three of four starts since Gorham claimed her last summer, including victories in two stakes.

But with Mandy's Gold in Gorham's 20-horse stable, there is no room atop the totem pole. Mandy's Gold was a primary reason that Gorham enjoyed the best year of his career in 2002, as she earned over $666,000 and won five stakes, highlighted by the Grade 1 Ruffian at Belmont Park.
