'Puxa' out for three straight stakes

ARCADIA, Calif. - The stretch duel appears to be the favorite part of racing for Puxa Saco, who will attempt to extend her stakes-winning streak to three races in Monday's $150,000 Santa Ynez Stakes at Santa Anita.

In two starts for trainer Jenine Sahadi, Puxa Saco is unbeaten, having won the six-furlong Anoakia Stakes here on Oct. 20 and the seven-furlong Moccasin Stakes at Hollywood Park on Nov. 16. In both races, Puxa Saco rallied from fourth to reach contention on the turn, and put away the competition to win by a length or more.

Best of the Rest peaks for Classic

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Best of the Rest served notice he will be a force to reckon with in the Sunshine Millions Classic after working five furlongs in 59.60 seconds at Calder on Saturday.

"That's the second time in two weeks he's worked in 59 and change, which is above and beyond for him," trainer Eddie Plesa said. "Usually he goes around there in around a minute and change or 1:01. I don't think he could be coming up to this race any sharper."

Struggling 'Mystic' has much to prove

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Sometimes, opponents just catch up. A horse such as Mystic Lady had a huge jump on many of her peers when knocking out the bulk of a bankroll that now has surpassed $1 million, but it has been eight races and nearly 10 months since the mare last won.

Xtra Heat romps

Laurel Park's What a Summer Stakes on Saturday was billed in advance as a public workout for Xtra Heat, the Eclipse Award winner as best 3-year-old filly in 2001, and it played out that way.

She led through fractions of 23.18 and seconds, completing the distance in 1:09.43. Gazillion finished second, 2 3/4 lengths behind the winner, and Bernie's Gold finished third in the six-horse field.

Witt Ante rallies

NEW ORLEANS - In the Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile last month, Meteor Impact ran away from Witt Ante as if Witt Ante were tied to a post. Saturday, in the $75,000 Crescent City Derby, Meteor Impact again came into the stretch with a full head of steam, but this time the post started moving. Witt Ante turned back Meteor Impact's rally and drew away in the last furlong for a 2 3/4-length win.
