Class and weight give Lilah edge

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Lilah, who has proven competitive against money-condition allowance company in her last two starts, drops into a much softer spot and should be the one to beat in Friday's six-furlong, $38,000 allowance feature for fillies and mares at Gulfstream Park.

Rhinaa finally faces weaker

ARCADIA, Calif. - Trainer Dan Hendricks has grown tired of sending Rhiana against the leading fillies and mares at Santa Anita.

After watching Rhiana finish second to Printemps in the Paseana Handicap on Jan. 15 and third to Starrer and You in the Grade 1 Santa Maria Handicap on Feb. 16, Hendricks is ducking Sunday's $300,000 Santa Margarita Handicap in favor of a $65,000 allowance race over a mile on turf on Friday.

"I thought it might be a little easier than Sunday's race, but I may be a bad handicapper," said Hendricks, displaying his dry wit.

Last start was in Breeders' Cup

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Early in the Oaklawn Park meet trainer Larry Jones was concerned whether Ruby's Reception would make the $75,000 Honeybee for 3-year-old fillies because weather had forced the cancellation of training on a handful of mornings. But the bullet 1:14.60 six furlongs she worked on Sunday has put her in the starting gate for Saturday's Honeybee.

Jess Perfect back for more

Jess Perfect will make his first start since winning the Grade 2 Sunland Fall Futurity in December in the second of three trials to the Grade 2 West Texas Derby on Friday at Sunland Park.

The 10 fastest qualifiers return for the finals on March 23.

Jess Perfect, owned by Tommy Winters and Edwin Hyslop, won the Sunland Fall Futurity by a neck in 19.61 seconds for the 400 yards, the same distance as Friday's derby trials.

Fonner Park: Anderson joins elite

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. - The David Anderson stable has been red-hot in the opening weeks of the meet here, sending out winners at a 26-percent clip while hitting the board with 27 of 45 starters.

Last Friday, Anderson saddled four winners on the nine-race card to join Tim Gleason and Marv Johnson as the only trainers to accomplish that feat at this track. Gleason and Johnson have won four races on a card multiple times and share the record of five winners on a card.

Forced to the forefront

SUNLAND PARK, N.M. - Janet Bowers saddled her first winner as a trainer on Sunday, but that doesn't make her a greenhorn. Bowers, 45, has been involved in the sport for two decades, albeit behind the scenes.

She and her husband, Robert, own an all-purpose breeding, boarding, and training facility near Albuquerque, N.M., where Janet's first winner, Spirit de Azure, was bred and foaled.

Taking it easy with Trust N Luck

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - With Kentucky Derby hopefuls falling by the wayside seemingly on a daily basis, trainer Ralph Ziadie was not about to take any chances with Trust N Luck on Tuesday morning during the colt's final major prep for the $1 million Florida Derby on March 15.

Trust N Luck was the first horse out on the track following the renovation break at Calder on Tuesday, and, with regular rider Cornelio Velasquez aboard, worked an easy five furlongs in 1:02.

Sunscreen back from vacation

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - When Sunscreen gave up so easily in the Grade 2 La Prevoyante Handicap, trainer Jonathan Sheppard knew a change of scenery was in order.

"It may have been too tough a spot for her anyway," Sheppard said, "but normally she keeps galloping. That day she packed it in."

Defrere's Vixen, Lone Star Sky aim high

NEW ORLEANS - There is nuts, and then there is nuts. Remember, Tuesday was Mardi Gras. So while it might seem folly to take on both Badge of Silver and Kafwain in Sunday's $750,000 Louisiana Derby, it is probably not as crazy as walking down Bourbon Street wearing nothing but carefully placed strips of yellow "Do Not Cross" police tape, which one couple used for clothing on a damp, rainy Fat Tuesday.
