Woodbine: Star Shoot upset

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Winter Garden held off a stern stretch bid from 2-5 favorite Hour of Justice to post an upset in Saturday's $143,500 at Woodbine.

Chantal Sutherland rode Winter Garden, who battled up front with Deputy Cures Blues through wind-aided splits of 21.93 and 44.31 seconds in the six-furlong dash for 3-year-old fillies.

Hour of Justice raced in tight quarters on the turn while stalking the pace, and came wide into the lane. She appeared to have Winter Garden measured in midstretch, but Winter Garden prevailed by a half-length.

Ministers Wild Cat scratched

ARCADIA, Calif. - Ministers Wild Cat was scratched from Saturday's $750,000 Santa Anita Derby because of a sore right hind foot, trainer Neil Drysdale said Saturday morning.

Drysdale said Ministers Wild Cat could race as soon as next weekend.

Unbeaten 'Gal' tries going a mile

PORTLAND, Ore. - Back Street Gal, unbeaten in three starts, takes on six other 3-year-old fillies in Sunday's one-mile, $10,000 Mt. St. Helens Stakes at Portland Meadows.

Back Street Gal, a homebred daughter of Cisco Road and Mi Moment who races for Bill Hepperle, is already a stakes winner twice over, having scored in the Lassie and Ms. stakes, both at six furlongs. She has never attempted a mile, however, and she will be doing so on Sunday after a layoff of nearly two months.

Trainer Jim Fergason said he will not use the time away as an excuse.

Jockey Quincy Welch had her in front every step of the way in each victory, and will be reunited with the 7-year-old Tantoo in Sunday's featured $21,900 allowance for fillies and mares at four furlongs.
