McKinney takes Bayakoa Stakes

McKinney ($5.00) rallies to win the the $50,0000 Bayakoa Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Saturday.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark - McKinney rallied past the leaders in the final furlong for a length and a quarter win over Majority Whip in the $50,0000 Bayakoa Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Saturday.

It was another half-length back in third to pacesetter Red n'Gold.

McKinney($5) settled in third behind 4-5 favorite Red n'Gold, who led through fractions of 24.50 for the opening quarter and 48.56 for the half while Majority Whip raced in second. McKinney rallied through the stretch, and covered the mile and a sixteenth for fillies and mares over a fast track in 1:44.35.

Rice, Alonso stars of Tampa's Florida Cup

Chef's Choice ($19.20) upsets 3-5 favorite Cellars Shiraz to capture the $84,600 Turf Ogle & Company Turf Distaff at Tampa Bay Downs on Sunday.

Trainers Don Rice and Enrique Alonso were the heroes on Tampa Bay Downs' inaugural Florida Cup Day, combining to win four of the six stakes races showcasing Florida breds on Sunday.

Rice sent out Chef's Choice to upset 3-5 favorite Cellars Shiraz to capture the $84,600 Turf Distaff Handicap by 1 & 3-4 lengths then returned to win the $85,250 Turf Classic by 1 1-2 lengths over 5-2 choice Sir Brian's Sword. Jockey Thomas Pompell rode both winners for Rice, Tampa Bay Downs' leading trainer.

Fencelineneighbor upsets Via Borghese

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Fencelineneighbor, the longest price on the board at 30-1, outlasted Fortuitious, the 5-2 favorite, to post a half length victory in Sunday's $75,000 at Gulfstream Park.

Fencelineneighbor stalked a leisurely pace, gained command at midstretch then withstood Fortuitious who was sent postward the favorite despite making her first start since Oct. 5. Fortuitious raced in the middle of the pack for six furlongs, had to await room in traffic around the turn and entering the stretch then finished well once clear to just miss.

Woodbine cancels again

Woodbine's live card was cancelled for the second time in three days Sunday because of unsafe track conditions. A thawing out surface created uneven spots on the track, which was fast in some places and muddy in others. Last Friday's card was cancelled after a snow/ice storm Thursday night.

Sunday's Jacques Cartier Stakes was rescheduled for Friday, which is the next scheduled card of the Woodbine meeting.

Night Patrol best in Sunland Park Handicap

SUNLAND PARK, N.M. - Sunland Park staged two $100,000-added stakes for older horses Saturday and both featured exciting stretch duels between Steve Asmussen runners and horses owned by the Everest Stables.

Asmussen regularly ships horses here and after Saturday's races has a 39-16-7-2 record. The Everest Stables' Island Fashion won her maiden in the WinStar Sunland Park Oaks here last Saturday.

Medaglia d'Oro creates $398,612 minus show pool

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Medaglia d'Oro created a $398,612 minus show pool at Oaklawn Park on Saturday when he won the Grade 2, $500,000 Oaklawn Handicap. The hit came about an hour and a half after Azeri accounted for a $147,094 minus show pool with her win in the Grade 1, $500,000 Apple Blossom Handicap earlier in the card at Oaklawn.

Of the $1,593,676 in the show pool for the Oaklawn Handicap, approximately $1.4 million was bet on Medaglia d'Oro.

He paid $2.20 across the board. Azeri paid $2.80, $2.20 and $2.20.

Western Pride takes San Bernardino

ARCADIA, Calif. - After entering and being scratched from three stakes in March, Western Pride finally launched his 2003 campaign in Saturday's $150,000 San Bernardino Handicap at Santa Anita.

Western Pride's hard-earned victory made his comeback after a 10-month layoff worth the wait.

Ridden by Patrick Valenzuela, Western Pride had an ideal trip, stalking the pace to early stretch and holding off a stubborn Total Impact to win by a neck. Western Pride ($10) ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.56.

Santa Anita carryover reaches $732,097

ARCADIA, Calif. - Buddy Gil, the 6-1 winner of Saturday's Santa Anita Derby, helped create a pick six carryover of $732,097 for Sunday's nine-race program.

The amount is believed to be the highest one-day carryover in the history of the popular bet. The pool was $1.3 million on Saturday after Santa Anita guaranteed a minimum pool of $1 million for the Santa Anita Derby program.

No favorites were successful during Saturday's pick six races, making the sequence nearly impossible for bettors.

Medaglia d'Oro cruises in Oaklawn Handicap

Medaglia d'Oro ($2.20) motors to the wire under Jerry Bailey to post a 2 3/4-length win in the Grade 2, $500,000 Oaklawn Handicap at Oaklawn Park on Saturday.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark - Medaglia d'Oro led throughout for a two and three-quarter length win over Slider in the Grade 2, $500,000 at Oaklawn Park on Saturday. It was a head back in third to Kudos.

The race shared a card with the Grade 1, $500,000 Apple Blossom Handicap, which was won by 2002 Horse of the Year Azeri.

Medaglia d'Oro paid $2.20 across the board, and created a minus show pool of $398,612.

Buddy Gil beats them again

ARCADIA, Calif. - Buddy Gil continued his mastery of Santa Anita's best 3-year-olds by outfinishing the longshot Indian Express and favored Atswhatimtalknbout in Saturday's $750,000 , the final major West Coast prep race for the Kentucky Derby. The win gave jockey Gary Stevens his record ninth Santa Anita Derby victory.

Buddy Gil loomed up on the outside of the leaders around the final turn, and then he and Indian Express pulled away from the rest. They had a spirited battle down the stretch, with Buddy Gil proving best by a head.
