Blushing Rahy set to rebound

Consider it the calm before the storm. With a final influx of racing stock expected in the coming week with the closing of Oaklawn Park, Lone Star Park should be in a better position to fill some of the richer allowance races offered in its condition book. But for Sunday's program, fans will have to make do with a single entry-level allowance race, which will be run as the seventh race on the 10-race card.

The $29,000 feature is for fillies and mares, 4-years-old and up, going 1 1/16 miles on turf.

Anglian Prince in 2003 debut

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Anglian Prince, a reformed claimer who finished second in last year's Queen's Plate, launches his 4-year-old campaign in Sunday's Woodbine feature, a seven-furlong race for $80,000 optional claimers.

Anglian Prince, who graduated with a $25,000 claiming tag at 2, began to blossom when he won a first-level allowance in his final appearance as a 2-year-old. He matured considerably from 2 to 3, pulling off a 23-1 shocker in his fourth start of the year in the Grade 3 Marine Stakes, earning a 101 Beyer Speed Figure.

Glad to be Here one to beat

PORTLAND, Ore. - Glad to be Here will be favored by default in Sunday's $25,000 Oregon Derby at Portland Meadows, which matches eight promising 3-year-olds at 1 1/8 miles.

Glad to be Here, who races for breeder Burle Oakley, will benefit from the defection of Cee Cruiser, who will remain on the sidelines because he has been plagued by lingering soreness since his victory in the March 22 Preview Stakes.

Baker's fillies worth following

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Reade Baker is strong in the 3-year-old filly division this season. He came close to capturing the first local stakes race for that division when Hour of Justice finished second, beaten a half-length at 2-5, in last Saturday's $143,500 Star Shoot.

"I didn't get lucky the other day," said Baker. "She got shuffled back far enough, then got into trouble."

Hour of Justice, owned by Stronach Stable, suffered her first defeat following two impressive victories here last fall.

Long-idle Fancy As returns to his roots in six-furlong prep

CALGARY, Alberta - Fancy As, off since running seventh in the $1 million Santa Anita Handicap on March 2, 2002, makes his much-anticipated return to Alberta in Sunday's featured optional claimer at Stampede Park.

Fancy As will be coupled with Intore in the six-furlong race, worth $20,300, and the entry will be heavily favored in the field of eight. But Fancy As is the horse the public will be backing and watching with keen interest.

Derby timing wrong for Cee Cruiser

PORTLAND, Ore. - For the colts and geldings who began this meeting as 2-year-olds in October, it is a test of endurance just to make it to the $25,000 Oregon Derby, which will be renewed at nine furlongs on Sunday.

Cee Cruiser, who figured to be favored after posting back-to-back wins in the McFadden Memorial and the Preview, both at 1 1/16 miles, didn't quite make it.

Red-hot Reavis remains king of the hill

STICKNEY, Ill. - The barrage of winners he has sent out at this Hawthorne meet usually drowns them out, but trainer Mike Reavis is starting to hear footsteps.

Through racing here Tuesday, Reavis had won with an amazing 36 of 90 starters, a 40 percent strike rate. Reavis is a lock to win yet another training title on Chicago's West Side, but already he is bracing for Arlington Park, where things get much tougher.

"I've always said you've got to win as many as you can as fast as you can until Arlington," Reavis said.

Randaroo looks too tough

Randaroo, unbeaten and untested in her first three career starts, figures to be an odds-on favorite again in Sunday's $75,000 Smart Halo Stakes, a six-furlong sprint for 3-year-old fillies at Pimlico.

As a 2-year-old, Randaroo won her two races by a combined margin of more than 15 lengths, including the Grade 3 Valley Stream at Aqueduct. Trainer Tony Dutrow gave her three months off, and she returned with an easy 4 3/4-length win over two-other-than allowance foes in New York at 1-5 odds.

Hollendorfer is aces

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Jerry Hollendorfer is holding aces going into Sunday's $60,000-added San Jose Stakes at Bay Meadows.

He has two strong entrants among the six 3-year-old fillies who will run in the 1 1/16-mile race.

Hollendorfer sends out Lucky Sabre, the top 3-year-old filly at the Golden Gate Fields meeting until her fourth-place finish in the California Oaks. He also sends out Christmas Time, who won her first two starts at Arlington Park last summer before running second as the even-money favorite in the $75,000 Top Flight Handicap.

Final stop before Louisville

Horsephotos
If Empire Maker handles an off track he will likely handle his Wood Memorial competition Saturday at the Big A for trainer Bobby Frankel and rider Jerry Bailey.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - In the 109 seconds it took for him to win the Florida Derby, Empire Maker went from underachiever to Kentucky Derby favorite. If he is to maintain that position in three weeks, Empire Maker must clear one more hurdle, Saturday's $750,000 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct.

To do that, Empire Maker may have to answer one important question.

Can he swim?
