Lexington for Domestic Dispute

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Bob Baffert must be in a forgiving mood these days. After watching Domestic Dispute throw in back-to-back clunkers, Baffert is giving the once-highly regarded colt a final chance on the Kentucky Derby trail by running him Saturday in the $325,000 Coolmore Lexington Stakes at Keeneland.

Christmas Away presses on

LEXINGTON, Ky. - If you missed the latest two-turn grass stakes for 3-year-olds in Kentucky, just wait a bit. The next one should be right around the corner.

Indeed, only 13 days after the Transylvania Stakes helped open the Keeneland meet, here comes the $100,000 Forerunner, a 1 1/8-mile turf race that, except for distance, essentially replicates the conditions of the one-mile Transylvania. In case that's not enough, the Crown Royal American Turf is at Churchill Downs only 15 days after the Forerunner.

End near for Affirmed Success?

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Affirmed Success came out of his last-place finish in Saturday's Carter Handicap with filling in his right front ankle, a problem that could end the 9-year-old gelding's brilliant racing career.

"Right now, I'd say it's 50-50," trainer Richard Schosberg said when asked if Affirmed Success would race again. "He owes us nothing. We've always tried to make the right decisions with him and he's always come through for us."

Kafwain regains his health

ARCADIA, Calif. - Kafwain has finally recovered from an illness that prevented him from training for 10 days after the Santa Anita Derby, and the colt went back to the track Tuesday for the first time since his third-place finish.

"He got sick on me; he had a low-grade deal going on," trainer Bob Baffert said. "He and Atlantic Ocean both got sick."

Baffert shipped Indian Express, Santa Catarina, and Domestic Dispute to Kentucky on Tuesday, but delayed Kafwain's departure. "I wanted to make sure he was okay, so I will give him a couple more days."

Fly and Eagle looks best

ARCADIA, Calf. - After squandering a perfect trip at odds of 5-1 in his most recent start, Fly and Eagle is a contender again at a likely shorter price in the seventh race feature Thursday at Santa Anita. The 1 1/8-mile turf race for California-breds attracted a field of seven; some are out of their element.

Churchill rescinds bet policy

Churchill Downs Inc. has decided to allow bets at the tracks it owns to be made up until the gate opens, effective immediately. The decision ends Churchill's five-month-old policy of closing betting windows with one minute remaining to post time.

The policy change was announced on Tuesday, 12 days before Churchill Downs is scheduled to open its spring meet and 19 days before the Kentucky Derby. The policy will be implemented at all six of Churchill's tracks.

Morey claims worth following

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Based strictly on Beyer Speed Figures, Rich Musique is the one to beat in Thursday's feature, a six-furlong $50,000 optional claiming race that has attracted a field of six fillies and mares. But while Rich Musique's past two Beyers tower above those of her rivals, other factors point to Kona Queen.

Peekskill's day has arrived

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - One year after being on the Kentucky Derby trail, Peekskill finds himself still struggling to win a second-level allowance race. It's a hurdle he should finally overcome in Thursday's 1 1/16-mile, $38,000 allowance feature at Gulfstream Park.

Norman has strong entry

Write it and they will come.

That slightly altered movie quote aptly describes the response from Lone Star Park horsemen to a $33,000 three-other-than allowance race, with a $50,000 claiming option, written in the condition book for Thursday's program. The six-furlong race drew a full field of 14, half of whom have won or placed in a stakes race during the last 16 months.

Ruling Star and Explosive Truth, an entry from trainer Cole Norman, each bring strength to the race.

A change of plans for Midas Eyes

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Midas Eyes, the speedy colt who likely would have been the favorite Saturday in the Coolmore Lexington Stakes at Keeneland, will bypass the race to run instead in the April 26 Derby Trial at Churchill Downs, trainer Bobby Frankel said Monday from Hollywood Park.
