Schickedanz impressed with Adamo

FORT ERIE, Ontario - Bruno Schickedanz, who has been the leading owner in victories at Fort Erie for the last six years, has a new trainer in his Fort Erie division. He's Anthony Adamo, a 32-year-old native of Kenmore, N.Y.

Kevin Attard, who took over the training of 20 Schickedanz horses from Ray O'Connor in a mid-season change last year, has returned to Woodbine. John Simms, who with a dozen horses was the other half of the owner's training duo here in 2002, will be taking over the bulk of the 40-odd runners that Schickedanz intends to run at Fort Erie.

Is Handy N Bold still a top sprinter?

AUBURN, Wash. - With a record-equaling nine local stakes wins, Handy N Bold doesn't appear to have much left to prove in Sunday's six-furlong, $35,000 Seattle Handicap for older horses at Emerald Downs.

But he does.

After a brief 2002 campaign that saw him beat just one horse in only two starts, Handy N Bold, now 8, needs to show that he still belongs with the fastest sprinters on the grounds.

Hamm saddles top two in Tougaloo

NORTH RANDALL, Ohio - Trainer Tim Hamm holds a strong hand here on Sunday when he sends out a three-horse entry, including three-time stakes winner Ifufeelfroggyleap, in the $35,000 Tougaloo Stakes. The six-furlong race is for 3-year-old Ohio-bred fillies.

In her first start this year, Ifufeelfroggyleap tired to finish sixth, beaten 10 3/4 lengths, in Beulah Park's six-furlong Royal North Stakes. She could prove hard to catch in the Tougaloo. Under the allowance conditions of the race, she is highweighted at 120 pounds, and will be ridden by Julio Felix.

Melair looks overloaded with speed

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Trainer Caesar Dominguez admits that Long Term Wish looks, acts, and performs like a late-running sprinter. So what's she doing in the $200,000 Melair Stakes, racing around two turns at 1 1/16 miles?

"It's not the strongest field, and they're all going to be gunning," Dominguez said.

He believes her jockey, Alex Solis, will have her relaxed. "There's going to be lots of speed, and she will come running," Dominguez said.

He is right about one thing - the Melair is filled with speed.

Ageless Native Desert eyes repeat

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - There is very little left for Native Desert to accomplish.

A former maiden claimer, he has earned more than $1.7 million, won 21 races, and developed a following as a regional star.

Along the way, one of Native Desert's annual stops has been the $175,000 Khaled Stakes at Hollywood Park. He won the turf race for California-breds in 1998, finished third in 2001 and scored another victory last year.

Tough puzzle for pick six players to solve

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Bettors seeking to conquer Saturday's $1 million guaranteed pick six at Hollywood Park will have to get through three sprints for maiden or allowance horses, each with at least 12 entrants.

Aside from the six lucrative stakes that make up the bulk of the California Gold Rush program for statebreds, there are four sprints Saturday that are stakes in name only. Two are for maidens and two are for first-condition allowance horses.

Three of those races appear in the pick six, which covers the fifth through 10th races.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - At various times, General Challenge has been a Kentucky Derby favorite, a candidate for Horse of the Year, and a mainstay in California racing.

On Saturday, he has a chance to become something else - a comeback hero at the age of 7 - when he makes his first start after an absence of 2 1/2 years in the $150,000 Tiznow Stakes on the California Gold Rush program at Hollywood Park.

Jetinto Houston can live up to promise

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Jetinto Houston made her first start for the Team Valor Syndicate and trainer Jenine Sahadi in the Irish O'Brien Stakes at Santa Anita on March 16, and roared from off the pace to post a convincing five-length win.

The race set future expectations at a high level.

When Jetinto Houston starts in Saturday's $150,000 B. Thoughtful Stakes at Hollywood Park anything less than a victory will be considered a disappointment.

"She's been working great and looks awesome," Sahadi said. "I don't have one knock on her."
